Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7-This colorful, hands-on guide introduces a number of different branches of science. The projects range from the fairly simple (clay pot wind chimes, pinwheel helicopter) to the complex (model grist mill, powered model boats, xylophone). The detailed instructions include a list of materials needed and explanatory line drawings. The activities are divided into four sections: air, water, earth, and fire. Extensive informational sidebars explain the principles involved. Attractive, full-color photographs show a variety of actively involved, enthusiastic kids. However, only 8 of the 50 projects listed in the contents have a "needs adult help" symbol, yet many of them require the use of a saw, razor knife, and/or drill and could be dangerous without adult supervision. Judith Hahn's How Science Works (Readers Digest, 1991) is another excellent source with sound scientific information and more adequate adult supervision advisories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for quality projects, July 1, 2009

This review is from: Science Crafts for Kids: 50 Fantastic Things to Invent & Create (Paperback)
We borrowed this book from the library and liked it so much that I decided to buy it. It has lovely photography which makes each project very appealing. The instructions are very easy to follow. I disagree with the review that said the materials are hard to find, but you will need some basic tools (drill, hacksaw, utility knife, needle and thread) for some projects. Also, I would not recommend this book to someone without a backyard. It is not kitchen table science, but really requires access to the outdoors.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great, September 29, 2005
This review is from: Science Crafts for Kids: 50 Fantastic Things to Invent & Create (Paperback)
This book provides a lot of crafts, but next to impossible ways of gathering material to actually complete them. I found the book useless without the help of a process or program to get the material from.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Projects, February 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I received the book only a few days after I ordered it. It was in perfect condition. It has great ideas for science projects that are interesting and go along with the science curriculum that kids are learning in school. I have already picked out several projects to make for the Science Fair.
