Book Description

9 and up4 and up
Sixty-five million years ago, the dinosaurs died. Well, maybe they didn´t croak that instant, but sixty-five million years ago was definitely not a good year for the dinosaurs, who went into a bit of a prolonged decline thereafter.

Sixty-five million years later, eleven year old Gene Beck, a brainy kid who likes reading and eating Zagnut bars more than he likes exercise, is gloomily anticipating his humiliation during Windbag Middle School’s annual fitness test. While contemplating a dark and vile fate, Gene is surprised when two small maple trees—who have been thinking thoughts of their own—introduce themselves as Zeus and Apollo, the ancient Greek gods.

Blending science, mythology, and humor, the Science Club Kids series will entertain readers of all ages.

About the Author

Byron "Doc" Hansen has two degrees in nuclear science and engineering, obtained from Idaho State University, plus a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho. When he is not writing Science Club Kids books, Byron works for SCIENTECH, Inc., an engineering consulting company based in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Byron's favorite science fiction writer is E. E. "Doc" Smith, and his favorite science fiction story is E. E. "Doc" Smith's the Skylark series. Byron's greatest frustration is losing what was apparently this planet's last copy of the Skylark series.

Byron has a soft spot in his head for all the little hairy ones, but most especially for cats. (Sadly, Byron resists all therapeutic attempts to relieve this condition.) He enjoys tennis and road trips on his Harley.

Dennis Meier has two degrees in nuclear engineering, obtained from Texas A&M University sometime during the seventies. Having completed a second master’s degree in technical communication from Boise State University, Dennis granted himself the title "Masterful," because, quite literally, he is full of master’s degrees.

A native of College Station, Texas, Dennis moved to Idaho to work at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory when he learned that, yes, there are places on this planet that aren’t, hot, humid, and teeming with cockroaches and fire ants. He currently lives in Boise, with his wife, Donna, and their son, Justin. When Dennis is not writing Science Club Kids books, he writes and edits technical documents as the owner of 2(DM) LLC, a technical communications consulting company, and he sometimes teaches undergraduate technical communication at Boise State.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids!, October 7, 2003
By
Jan English (Boise, ID United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Science Club Kids and the Fabulous Phrenosan Wormhole Device (Paperback)
Hooked on science or math? Yes or no this book will grab your interest and pull you through a wormhole into a captivating world of Greek gods, time travel, and galactic castrophes. You'll meet a group of delightful kids who have been scooped up by Zeus and Apollo, ancient Greek gods, to save a planet halfway across the galaxy from colliding with a meteor.

Written with wit and humor the authors have successfully blended mathematical concepts, space and time travel theories, and mythology into a well-written and entertaining novel. The mathematical concepts are presented clearly, at times using diagrams, making understanding a cinch. Where a word might be new to a reader a definition is deftly and clearly incorporated into the story. Issues that confront kids today are not ignored either. Bullying and physical differences area ddressed along with just being a kid

This novel held my attention for the full length and I'm over fifty. The Science Club Kids and the Fabulous Phrenosan Wormhole Device is not just for kids! I for one am looking forward to Book # 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real Discovery in Idaho, October 15, 2003
This review is from: The Science Club Kids and the Fabulous Phrenosan Wormhole Device (Paperback)
This wonderfully inventive novel by writing team Bryon Hansen and Dennis Meier has the potential for a great kid's series. Currently suffering from an overly long title (The Science Club Kids, and the Fablous Phrenosan Wormhole Device), this novel is very close to being a gem. Although the story is extremely well written, I think parts of it may be too advance for it's intended audience of 10-13. However with a mild reworking to speed up the story and reduce some of the technical details, this book could be the debut of an exciting series. There is no doubt that Hansen and Meier know how to tell a story. The characters are well-rounded and the plot is weird enough to capture the Harry Potter crowd. I say call it "The Wormhole Device, The Adventures of the Science Club Kids", and get ready to move some books. I hear the second novel in the series is done and the third is in the works. Hansen and Meier take their work seriously, and it shows on the page. Prediction: These guys are close to a nice New York deal. One last thing, in the trade paperback version that I read, this novel has one of the worst covers in the history of publishing. Don't be put off by it, it has nothing to do with text.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Science Fiction Adventure, August 28, 2008
By
L. Suski (Idaho Falls, ID) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Science Club Kids and the Fabulous Phrenosan Wormhole Device (Paperback)
A great young adult science fiction adventure with plenty of humor and some actual science. It can be read just as a story or, if the reader is so inclined, the science principals can be the catalyst to further scientific research and learning.

Don't let the "young adult" audience mentioned above keep you from reading this book if you are an adult. Both my husband and I ( way over 40) thoroughly enjoyed the book. Also, the science content is presented in a way that the details do not detract from the adventure part of the story that can be enjoyed by the pre-teen age group.

The story has the makings of being of a good series and both my husband and I look forward to the next book
