Book Description

Science Fair Projects
This is a collection of 53 science projects and experiments which revolve around space science and aerodynamics, astronomy and the night sky, the seasons, light and optics. All the projects involve inexpensive and readily available materials. They explain and demonstrate scientific principles, covering areas including the Moon's motions, star patterns, how the sun casts shadows, paper aeroplanes designed for distance, gravity's effect on light, light pollution, maps of the northern and southern hemispheres, the effect of sunlight on colour, the practical benefits of space research, and the timeline of space exploration.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6?A collection of 53 clever astronomy-related experiments. They range from very easy to moderately complex; some involve writing or drawing, others, easy mathematical calculations, and still others, the construction of simple models and devices. There are plans, for example, for building a 20-foot diameter model of the solar system to indicate the varying appearance of the rings of Saturn throughout the year. Each topic includes an explanation of the problem to be explored and the reasons for doing so, a description of the activity with a list of the needed materials, a diagram to clarify the instructions, and a concluding list of questions about what occurred or what the observer discovered. There is, however, no explanation of what should happen, or why a given effect should be observed, leaving interpretation of the result to readers. Adult supervision is indicated when necessary. The instructions are dry but clear, while the introductions are written to engage readers' interest. The illustrations cannot be called works of art, but they are effective in conveying their message and elucidating the directions. While the simplest of the projects are not of science-fair caliber, they will spark young investigators' curiosity and will be valuable for parents who want to share some scientific know-how with their children.?Jeffrey A.
