This review is from: Science in the Federal Government: A History of Policies and Activities (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. I first used it 54 years ago in a course at U.C. Berkeley with the same title. The author taught the course. The book tells the history of the National Science Foundation and other US Government affiliated groups that provided grants to the private sector. These groups were right on target and are what made America a leader in science. It goes back to the beginning of the republic.

Unfortunately the right-wing extremist evangelicals hate both science and the federal government and have vowed to shrink it so it can be "drowned in a bathtub" as Norquist quips. Of course the government's role in scientific research would also be terminated. Until Ronald Reagan, we led the world in science. Now Asia is passing the U.S. in science and engineering.

We cannot let this happen. Read the book and see what you think.
