5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for science teachers!
This book contains a concise description of 75 formative assessments. Most would take 5-10 minutes of class time. Although the examples are specific to K-12 science classes, they could be easily adapted for almost any subject or age group. This is a book that I will refer to many, many times in the coming school year.

1.0 out of 5 stars A tools book that disappointed me
While I have high expectation from this book (11 five-star rating), I am deeply disappointed. First of all, as a tools book, I think this is the hardest one to follow. I wish this book can be a bit bigger in size, so the layout can be clear. I have a feeling that it try to pack millions words in a pocket-size book. However the main content (75 strategies) is in one...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Formative Assessment Ideas!, September 5, 2009
This review is from: Science Formative Assessment: 75 Practical Strategies for Linking Assessment, Instruction, and Learning (Paperback)
One of the best books I've read when dealing with ideas for implementing formative assessments in the science classroom. Paige Keeley does an excellent job supporting the use of formative assessments with research based evidence. Then she gives 75 examples of types of assessments that can be used, how to use them, when to use them, how to adapt them.... WOW! For teachers who have little extra time to search for new ideas, this is a treasure trove of assessment methods and best of all - THEY WORK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for Science teachers, July 13, 2009
This review is from: Science Formative Assessment: 75 Practical Strategies for Linking Assessment, Instruction, and Learning (Paperback)
Underpinned by sound research into effective pedagogy, this is an excellent resource for all Science teachers. The suggested activities are all easily implemented in the classroom and provide opportunities for improved student learning. Other teachers, as well as Science teachers, would also find this text very worthwhile as many of the activities could be easily adapted.

A very good resource for beginning teachers and a good, thought provoking refresher for experienced ones. I especially like the table which gives suggestions for assessment types. Keeley has written several fine books on this topic, but this is the most inclusive and useful.

This book has many useful strategies for evaluating student understanding. Many of which the students won't even know that you are checking their understanding. It explains how the strategy works, explains the rationale behind the strategy and possible modifications that you could do. This is going to be very helpful to me when I start student teaching. I highly recommend this book.

I don't know why this is tagged as "Science". Except for a couple of assessments that are specific to data analysis, this book is a gold mine of assessments that can be used in any classroom. The assessments can be done with few materials (no using your ticks to copy 150 worksheets!), are clearly explained and are relatively quick to use while still giving you clear feedback on what the students know. The assessments are varied enough that you can find ones that are great for the very beginning of the unit, in the middle and as the students approach mastery. What makes this book really worth the price, though, is the first few chapters where Keeley explains how best to use formative assessment and why formative assessment is so necessary for student learning. The other teacher who put me onto this book and I agree that we now have a much clearer understanding on the role formative assessment, when used deliberately, has on student achievement. This book should be required for all teachers--and the principals who are assessing them! (And seriously, don't skip the first chapters!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome!, August 27, 2010
This review is from: Science Formative Assessment: 75 Practical Strategies for Linking Assessment, Instruction, and Learning (Paperback)
I *love, love, love* this book! I've taken it to many teacher conferences over the past two months, and others who have it have raved about it at all. This is a MUST HAVE for all science teachers, novice and veteran. If I was a science coordinator, I would buy it for all of the teachers in my department - it's just that good. Many of the assessments can be adapted for other content areas. If you're looking for a gift for a teacher, science or otherwise, this is a gift that will be used over and over again!

However the main content (75 strategies) is in one chapter only. I found that other three chapters are not really useful and is very wordy. Finally, the strategies are not really "new" to me. I regret to get such an expensive book.

As the curriculum and instructional director for our school district, I am always on the look-out for good materials. My science faculty have used this book since the first day I added it to my lending library. The feedback for implementation has been very good.
