About the Author

Author, teacher, and healer, Mary Baker Eddy questioned conventional views about science, theology, and medicine, and for years searched the Bible for answers. From that time forward, she devoted her life to sharing this Science of Christianity with the world.

Science and Health can, and will, if you stay with it, change your life for the better in ways beyond what you can currently dream. It has done so with my life, and with thousands upon thousands of others, around the globe, for over a century.

However, this particular copy, to my knowledge, is the only Authorized paperback version of Science and Health (by Mary Baker Eddy) available for sale on the Amazon web site. Authorized, in this case, means authorized by the Christian Science Board of Directors - i.e. the Directors of the Christian Science Church which Mary Baker Eddy founded. Since the Church's copyright on the book has expired, others may legally print the book, but the only way to be absolutely certain you are getting what the author, Mary Baker Eddy intended, is to purchase a copy that has been authorized by, and published by, The Christian Science Board of Directors. For example, many of the other, no doubt well-meaning publishers who have copied this book, have left off certain key chapters.

The other way to determine whether the copy has been authorized by this Board is to examine if the circular Cross and Crown seal appears on the front of the book. The Church's registered trademark for this Cross and Crown seal is still in force, and that also assures the authenticity is genuine.

Now, buy it, and read it at a pace you are comfortable with. A few pages before turning the light out at night is one good way to begin. Be prepared to be challenged as to your core beliefs as to what is real and what is unreal. It matters not whether you agree with everything you read, but it would be well to place your primary focus on what you do agree with, setting aside for the moment what you do not understand and cannot accept.

I first read this book through in 1980 and have have read it again many times since. I've always been deeply moved by the fact that the author committed its pages to "honest seekers for Truth," because that's what the book delivers.

Mind you, this is more of a spiritual adventure than just a good read. It's also not for the faint of heart. It challenges the conventional wisdom on subjects such as science, theology, and medicine, as much today as when it was first published over 150 years ago. That's why, I suppose, it is so controversial.

I wasn't raised in Christian Science. My family is very involved in medicine and, although not a sickly child, from time to time I was made to endure injections and medical treatments which were painful, effective, and produced negative side-effects. Deep down I felt there was something better, especially when I saw family members pass on under conventional medical care. Over a period of years, through study and research, I began to see clearly a connection between mind, body and spirit. I experienced in various ways how my thought influenced my health and sense of well-being.

Two years before I was introduced Science and Health I was diagnosed with a condition the physician considered incurable. I was looking for a more hopeful outlook in alternative medicine and was coping with diet, vitamins and alot of prayer. However, when I began reading Science and Health, I realized that I could be healed. I dispensed with the vitamins and diet, continued to read Science and Health, to pray and be prayed for. I was completely healed in 2 weeks. That was almost 25 years ago, and I have had no relapse.

It is interesting the way the world is changing. This book was "way out there" 150 years ago - even 100. Maybe even 20. Today, most people I listen to tend to agree with the premises of the book if terms are modern and understood. The world is approaching the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy while not giving her credit. And that is OK. Apparently she never expected for all people to become Christian Scientists. She seemed to know that whatever Truth is, if it is truth, people will arrive at it by different roads and that is fine. It is interesting to me that people are approaching what Eddy said so many years ago, and most are not members of the Christian Science church.

Various respected people with large followings are using the books ideas as their own. Again, that would probably be fine with Eddy.

Leading philosophers, accomplished physical scientists and the like are coming to the conclusion that matter is not what it seems to be, that thoughts are things and that thoughts determine experience and make a life and that there is a divine Intelligence that made/makes all of the amazing order in the universe. Call it what you will. Folks can tap into it. If it seems to fail someone from time to time, it might be an absence of faith. Isn't trust the basis of Faith?

I give it 5 big stars. It is a book WAY ahead of its time and a book that makes people in general think. Nothing wrong with that!

We American's often take for granted our unique heritage as a place where ground-breaking religious/spiritual thinking has not only been tolerated, but encouraged. This book is a perfect example of the spiritual exploration of which we are capable. Although Mary Baker Eddy lived and wrote before women had the vote, she didn't let the period into which she was born limit the expanse of her thinking.

Mary Baker Eddy hadn't set out to be a spiritual pioneer, but as a young woman she was severely injured by a fall on the ice and was not expected to live. When doctors gave up on her recovery, she turned to her Bible. Through studying scriptural passages, she found herself completely well. She had a sense that this cure was not miraculous, but the result of the application of Christian principles which Jesus taught to his followers. The scientific method of inquiry was still a new idea in her day, but she decided to apply it to what she was discovering about the nature of spiritual healing. She found that it worked and that Jesus' methods of healing could be learned and practiced by any "sincere seeker of truth" in modern times. That's how she came to call her book, "Science and Health" because she applied the scientific method to the study of Christian healing.

Science and Health is a classic in American religious thought and spiritual inquiry, but it is also a mind-expanding read for anyone interested in understanding our loving relationship with God and the practicality behind Jesus' teachings. Although Science and Health is the textbook used by members of the Christian Science Church which Mary Baker Eddy founded in 1879, its ideas are inter-denominational. Eddy wished to share her discoveries with the world to help bring harmony and healing to those who are in need. Her book, and her innovative ideas, continue to be an inspiring gift from a fearless and far-sighted American woman who proved that prayer heals.
