Book Description

April 1, 2008 1933531037 978-1933531038
"Using Science Notebooks in Elementary Classrooms" is the must-have resource for teaching reading and reasoning skills in the primary grades. Learning science involves both the process of thinking and the ability to communicate those thoughts, and one of the most effective ways of building these skills is through the use of science notebooks. Mike Klentschy's book is designed for teachers who are beginning to use or would like to extend their use of notebooks in the classroom. Research-based best practices such as scaffolds, sentence starters, and writing prompts are clearly explained and illustrated. Examples of student work are included to provide insight for better instructional strategies. A discussion of the needs of English language learners and how notebooks helps increase language fluency and writing proficiency will be of particular interest to many teachers. And research-based practices show the use of science notebooks to be an effective assessment tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using Science Notebooks in Elementary Classrooms November 9, 2008
Format:Paperback
There are a lot of books out there on this very important topic of science notebook writing. Many are confusing, many not applicable to today's science classrooms, seemingly written by authors who haven't been teaching in the science classroom lately. It is important and rare to find a book that we can get the most out of. My goal last summer was to incorporate a new way of science notebook writing, so I bought 4 books on the subject that I felt would give me the best resource base on creating a science notebook writing program for my classes. "Using Science Notebooks in the Elementary Classroom" was the most beneficial of the four. The idea of this type of science notebook writing is to complete it after the investigation, activity or lab. Making sciecne meaningfful and relevent is key. The ideas described from this book helps students analyze, reflect and incorporate purpose in a way that they can use as a reference to relect on past experiences in the science classroom as well as incorporate in their portfolios. They correctly use the right variables, dependant, independant, and control, focus questions, predictions, developing a plan, observations, data, graphs, charts, drawing (so very important in science)claims and evidence, conclusions, relections & next steps and new questions and more. I have taught 7th and 8th grade science for 15 years, I am an adjunct instructor for science methods in a local teacher college, and I highly recommend this book as the best source on creating a science notebook writing element to your science classes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, purposeful and coherent December 19, 2010
By Carolyn
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This smartly developed and illustrated, educator friendly book describes why the process of using notebooks in the science classroom not only makes good sense for learning science content, but also as a link to language arts. The author shows how science notebooks help all children, including those who are limited English speakers learn the processes of science and vocabulary more effectively, providing both rationale and implementation examples in a chapter-by-chapter sequence that is easy to follow. The book is useful for coursework (I teach a graduate level class in Science Methods) or for classroom teachers looking for new curriculum ideas to integrate and effectively teach science.

1.0 out of 5 stars Author admits falsifying data in his research March 11, 2013
Format:Paperback
The publisher is no longer printing this book because the author has admitted to falsifying data in his research on science instruction. The publisher states that the underlying data in this book is in question. An internet search on the author's name and "falsifying data" will produce many articles with more details.
