Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I wrote this book because I wanted to help make the world a better place. Along the way my life was changed by what I discovered.

After decades studying the issues of environmental destruction, poverty and war, I concluded that the foundations for a better future are missing. We are at a time in the history of civilization when the certainties of the old worldview have disintegrated, and the concrete of a new worldview has not yet set. A key task, it seems to me, is to lay new philosophical and spiritual foundations on which we can build our future. New technologies, policies and laws are vital, but they will fail without strong foundations. Nothing less than radical change in our understanding of the universe, and of the meaning and purpose of life will do.

So I set out to explore what was happening at the cutting edges of science in order to create a coherent picture of the universe and our relationship to it that could form the basis of a more just, sustainable and peaceful future. What I found exceeded my wildest expectations, leading me on a personal journey that transformed my beliefs and life. Rather than the mechanical, alienating, meaningless vision of reality bequeathed to us by classical science, I found a living, conscious, interconnected, meaningful and purposeful universe of which we are co-creators. And I found a vision which resonates strongly with the beliefs and wisdom of many ancient spiritual traditions.

In exploring the emerging worldview, my intellectualism became balanced by an appreciation of experiential, intuitive, spiritual and other ways of knowing. I began to understand the limitations of human knowledge, and to look for ways to test the reliability of what we think we know that complement the scientific method. So the science of oneness is more than a coherent portrait of reality; it is also a holistic way of knowing that comes from personal experience, intuition and an inner sense of rightness as well as from reason and modern science.

My aim was not just to satisfy intellectual curiosity, but to change lives and the world. If this book is to fulfil my aims, it is important that you, my readers engage critically with the ideas presented. Many of the concepts may be new to you, and you may feel ill-equipped to evaluate them. But you have your own life experience, imagination, and conceptual frameworks by which you make sense of the universe. I encourage you to bring all these, to bring your whole self, to bear on the material. Question and challenge it, and reinterpret its meaning where appropriate. Seek what makes coherent sense of the whole of reality, not just its separate parts; and seek what makes sense physically, emotionally and spiritually as well as intellectually. Trust your inner voice, not mine. Remodel your understanding of reality as necessary, and act out of what you learn.

The journey of this book began more than a decade ago. I am not the person I was when I set out. My ideas have evolved and developed, and are continuing to shift. This book is not a set of ideas to be accepted or rejected, but an invitation to join me on a life-long voyage of discovery. At times the terrain is dry, and the going hard and steep. I’ve focused on key concepts and avoided technical jargon as far as possible, but it’s still a rugged journey. But the view from the summit is stupendous, giving new and glorious insights into the nature of the universe, our planet and ourselves; and bringing a new sense of identity and purpose, and a new hope for the future.

More About the Author

Dr Malcolm Hollick is married to co-author Christine Connelly, pictured with him here.

Malcolm has an MA from Cambridge University, and a PhD from The University of Western Australia, where he was a member of academic staff for 25 years. He still holds the position of Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Water Research. His research interests have always centred on environmental, conflict and other issues that threaten the Earth and humanity.

In 1998, Malcolm left academe and moved with Christine to the Findhorn Spiritual Community and Ecovillage in northern Scotland. Amongst other activities over the following 12 years, he halped to establish the holistic Findhorn Foundation College and wrote "The Science of Oneness." This ground-breaking book, which won the Scientific and Medical Network's book prize for 2006, argues the need for a new worldview that integrates science and spirituality. It includes intuitive ways of knowing such as meditation, as well as intellectual argument.

In 2008, Malcolm was awarded a 4-month visiting Fellowship at the University of Western Australia, during which he and Christine began work on "Hope for Humanity." Christine's background as an occupational therapist, emotional release therapist and textile artist complemented Malcolm's more intellectual approach to produce a creative synthesis of diverse ideas and information.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Review of The Science of Oneness by Swami Abhayananda, December 27, 2006

REVIEW OF MALCOLM HOLLICK'S THE SCIENCE OF ONENESS

We are in a revolutionary time, when the best minds around the globe are being opened to a universal wave of spiritual understanding, and it is a time when many are particularly cognizant of the inadequacies of the prevalent `religion' of scientific materialism which, having reached its zenith, is giving way to its antithesis. It is a `paradigm shift' that is taking place at this time in the world; and there are a very few exceptional minds, with a wealth of knowledge about the present state of the many facets of science, and an equally reflective overview of the `spiritual' perspective, who are capable of presenting as informed and impassioned an outline of the elements and ramifications of this present paradigm shift as is Malcolm Hollick. His book, The Science of Oneness, is filled with extraordinary information, both scientific and philosophical; and he leads the reader cautiously and gently toward the possibility of a spiritual worldview that takes into consideration the accumulated wisdom of the current molders of our modern culture as well as of the great seers of antiquity. He is not himself a seer, and he doesn't pretend to be; but he is an articulate proponent of the great paradigm shift, and an excellent teacher and guide on the explorative journey toward a thoughtful and informed understanding of both the scientific and the spiritual perspectives. I found it a wonderful read, and I highly recommend it.

This review is from: The Science of Oneness: A Worldview for the Twenty-First Century (Paperback)
I was attracted to this book by its title - it lives up to it. I thought I had a pretty good feel about quantum mechanics but Hollick introduces a digestible and integrative digest of its implications. It seems up to date, and explores boundaries of knowledge and does it very well indeed.

Clearly written and logically presented it explores the dualistic nature of sub atomic particles and implications, on connectiveness and entanglement, the discoveries of science pointing where the sages have been pointing - all in the same direction. A very readable book, even for the layperson.

No it doesnt introduce new aspects of science but it does bring diverse aspects of science together creating a feeling of me being totally insignificant and an integral connected part of a system (or am I creating that with my consciousness?). Whatever, this is a remarkable book for its breadth and the way it is woven together to leave one feeling at one as the author intended. I am however puzzled why this book is not more popular than it appears to be given the few reviews it has received. The highlighting pen has worked overtime including for its second read. An outstanding overview. Well done Malcolm!

5.0 out of 5 stars DEEP AND WIDE, December 18, 2007
This review is from: The Science of Oneness: A Worldview for the Twenty-First Century (Paperback)
This is a book of great depth and breadth. Informative, inspiring and extremely clear. Recommended for all those who have recognised that 'oneness' is the big idea' for the 21st century. (And I'm not saying that just because the author has some nice things to say about my own books!)
