The role of Jewish scholars in secularizing American culture may seem a compliment to Jews. But antisemites can use this book to good effect. The basic reason for anti-semitism in the modern world is fear that non-Christians given political rights would corrupt the basic Christian foundations of national life. Hollinger, without wanting to do anything but praise the Jewish contribution to America, also demonstrates that these fears of Jewish influence are not totally without foundation. It is unfortunate that Jewish scholars never try to understand the legitimate fears of those suspicious of Jewish influence. Certainly Hollinger offers nothing of that here.
