1.0 out of 5 stars Love the score and soundtrack but CD is incomplete
I bought this primarily for the Jean-Michel Bernard music. I was disappointed because the disc doesn't include alternate versions sans voice-overs. Many of these tracks have the actors' voices over the music. Wouldn't be such a problem for me as bonus tracks perhaps. Or have music sans voice-overs as bounus tracks. Either way there's room enough as the disc clocks in at...

5.0 out of 5 stars A better soundtrack than Eternal Sunshine!, January 9, 2007
This review is from: Science of Sleep (Audio CD)
I absolutely loved the music in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and thought that there couldn't be a more fitting original score......until i saw The Science fo Sleep. I bought this album just days after seeing Michel Gondry's latest film because I immediately fell in love with the music. The original score to the film exactly reflects the atmosphere of a dream state, as do the songs with rathe rnonsensically sweet lyrics and a drowsy tone. I am a huge fan of film and perhaps moreso the music featured in them, and this montauge of imagination is really my cup of tea. I really encourage anyone who loves the atmosphere of a Gondry film to buy this soundtrack, it's a fabulous one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfectly surreal match for a fairly surreal movie, October 3, 2006

Jean-Michel Bernard is the man behind the music for this, the music of the latest Michael Gondry movie ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"). I had never heard of him before, but he happens to have a few movie scores under his belt, Gondry's "Human Nature" (2001) among them, along with a few other albums.

The sound he puts out reminds of a blend between that of the previous Gondry collaborator, Jon Brion, and the specific album that David Hirschfelder composed for the movie "Shine". He incorporates samples of dialogue from the movie with classical and jazz elements, resulting in an overall score that is a perfectly surreal match for a fairly surreal movie.

The album contains a couple of very nice tracks from The Willowz (they seem to be a personal favorite of Gondry), along with a Kool & The Gang song ("Steppin' Out") that break the "spell" in the music that otherwise flows much like a dream from track to track.

Many of these tracks have the actors' voices over the music. Wouldn't be such a problem for me as bonus tracks perhaps. Or have music sans voice-overs as bounus tracks. Either way there's room enough as the disc clocks in at just under 49 minutes. Would be cool too if they included the film mixes of the Willowz tracks. Their "Ulcer Soul" song sounded psychedelic while fading in, out, and under the other audio in the film. I rated the disc one star but better to rate it 4 as it does have pretty much what was in the actual soundtrack, including the lovely "Coutances."

I have never slept as well as I slept while listening to this album. The sounds of crickets chirping and sea crashing against the rocks on the north shore of england allowed me to drift off into a land of bliss and serenity... i highly reccomend this album
