Neo-Eleusinian-Style Initiation,
By Alex William McNeal III (El Paso, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Science of the Soul: the Story of Transpersonal Psychology (DVD)
The very real fact that some pitifully sober minds whine and jibe that they cannot quite place the burgeoning field of Transpersonal Psychology into our well-established boxes of academic and scientific specialization represents a proof of sorts. This is no failure of the field itself being too obscure or murky; rather, it is a failure of academicians as a whole (not to mention the laity)--many of whom seem to have forgotten that the boundaries of insight and truth do not stop at an individual or organization's bank account, popularity, status-quo reinforcement, professional reputation, or governmental allowance! Real discoveries in any science, craft, or practice are reached when all whom share a stake in the findings do not become bound to trends and fashions, as so happens too often. Paradigm shifts are always painful re-birth pangs for the majority, the uninitiated. Considering the sensitive nature of the experiences endured by those who have innovated and championed this branch of psychological inquiry, we can come to think of "what it is", in the manner of an in-group/out-group approach (sadly): If you don't get it, it's not for you. For those who want to forever deify Freud or Jung (to a lesser extent Jung, being that his sympathies seemed to lean in this direction), turn back here. However, if you are a human being who has had a flash of something greater than the trials and minutiae of your own existence; something that has or threatens-to shatter your perceptions and prejudices about "self" and "other", and wish to find that "missing link" between dry, sterile psychological observation, and practical (everyday-applicable) spiritual/mystical experience--then, you have come to the right place. Transpersonal Psychology is largely considered the "fourth force" of the discipline, according to a couple of its founders like Sutich and Grof. The pioneers drawn to this realm have arrived through psychedelic experiences/sessions, through death and near-death experiences, through plain old interest, through persuasive intuitions, or through paradoxical grounded-flights of the imagination--all evolved souls no doubt, yet with scant more knowledge about life's aspects than anyone else. If you do not know what Transpersonal Psychology is, then that's perfectly fine and well--it only means you're still too personally involved in everything it is not.

Huh?,
By Theodore Roosevelt (Indio, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Science of the Soul: the Story of Transpersonal Psychology (DVD)
Kinda OK. Circles and circles around the subject. After watching the presentations, I still don't think I can acurately describe what Transpersonal Psychology is. I would watch it again, but it wasn't THAT interesting.
