Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 6-9-This book presents 32 experiments accompanied by several "project ideas," which offer less detailed instructions and encourage readers to develop their own procedures. Students are told how to turn milk into cheese, test the sugar content of cookies, and encouraged to try other intriguing activities. Some, such as constructing an ice-cream maker, will require a lot more background than is offered here. However, the text emphasizes the questions of science rather than offering answers. The experiments themselves often include suggestions for readers to explore the topic further. Some of these activities are simple and straightforward, such as putting celery sticks in water to test wilting properties. Others are more complicated, such as the investigation of color and photosynthesis. Instructions are fairly clear, but are given in a narrative format that might trip up kids used to numbered steps. Though they involve supermarket products, many will require extra materials as well (Lugol's iodine, elodea plant). Some knowledge of chemistry and decent math skills will make several activities easier to follow, though Tocci does weave some needed concepts into the text. A conversational tone and mild attempts at humor don't really succeed in making the book as much fun as a Vicki Cobb title and may put off older readers for whom many of the projects are suited. Despite some flaws, though, motivated students will find worthwhile material for science fairs.-Steven Engelfried, Deschutes County Library, Bend, OR
