Editorial Reviews

Review

"Each activity begins with a concise explanation of the concept upon which it focuses and includes a materials list, the procedure, follow-up questions, and extensions. These high-interest investigations use materials that are inexpensive, easily accessible, and familiar to students" (National Science Teacher's Association.org, October 2010)

Praise for The Science Teacher's Activity-a-Day

“Research shows that students are more attentive at the start of a lesson. The Science Teacher's Activity-a-Day provides short and engaging activities to get your lesson off to a dynamic start.”—Ryan Adams, Ed.S., Douglas County Teacher of the Year, Douglas County School System

“As a differentiation facilitator, I know how difficult it is for teachers to engage students of various learning styles and intelligences. I recommend this book to science teachers in middle through high school to kick-start science lessons.”—Lynn Freeman, School Improvement Specialist, Metropolitan Regional Educational Service Agency, Atlanta

4.0 out of 5 stars Slightly Unbalanced, but overall okay February 28, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I ordered this book to get some new ideas for my biology and chemistry classes. After receiving it I found that most of the activities are geared toward the life sciences. The book is split into three units: physical science, life science, and earth science. Each unit has several sections about a particular subject (16 sections total for the book) with about 10-12 lessons per section.

Most of the activities are short and would make a good warm-up, or demonstration. Some of the activities are kind of silly (like cutting up paper to try to cut it to the size of an atom).

Overall this book is fairly useful for me since I teach two subjects, however, I can see how others wouldn't find this book as helpful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not what I'd hoped for either. January 22, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Since 180 days is roughly the length of the school year, I was hoping against experience that this book would help me come up with some activities or at least demonstrations that I could use daily within my tiny supply budget. Alas, experience triumphs over hope again.

This book does contain many activities that are reasonably easy to set up and not unreasonably costly, but still far more than the forty cents per class section (about a penny and a half per kiddo) per day I have available. Individually, the activities are pretty cheap, but mostly they don't lend themselves to quick tear-down and repetition, which is absolutely vital if you teach 6 sections per day.

Good ideas, just not good ideas that can be done for pennies per day.

The blurb says grades 5-10 and I agree with that. Many of the activities are just too advanced. Still, I'm hoping to incorporate 20 or 30 activities that will work within my curriculum and budget.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for me - high school biology January 3, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I can probably use 30-40% of this book's content for high school biology class. It is a nice book; minimal work would be required to use the activities. Some of the activities are truly 5-10 minute items to do with your class. Some could take half the class to complete. It's all about adaptation, and I personally like the variety. For the price I paid, I think this is an absolute bargain. Most educational books give me one lousy activity for $50.

If you are a teacher for grades 5-7, you might consider the other book for the younger ages. This might be more pointed towards the higher ends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for short lab and especially ESL students October 23, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am extremely happy with my purchase! This book is stuffed with short activities that would work great as mini-labs (or full class labs, depending on your student's abilities). They have coordinating standards. Each lab has follow up questions.
There are labs that can fit for an entire middle school's science curriculum (or upper elementary).

The labs are simple enough for ESL students or good supplements for advanced material.

Love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Go for it! December 11, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really love this book. If you're a science teacher - get this one. I use it to spark my students curiosity before a unit of study starts. I don't give them any information, they have to tell me what they think is happening in the experiment. It's been very positive - now they want to know about exothermic and endothermic reactions, instead of me trying to 'get' them to learn.
Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book December 17, 2013
By RKH
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Not quite grade 10 but worked for my 9th graders and would be most perfect for middle school. I am hanging on to it as it is a good book just can't quite use it for my upper classes which is all I teach this year. If I were teaching middle school again definitely a must have.
