On Science, his major label debut with Rykodisc, Norwegian singer/songwriter Thomas Dybdahl sings "all I need is a quiet corner and a conversation," and presents a collection of ghostly and intimate songs suitable to exactly that setting. Dybdahl sounds like he might blow away in a stiff breeze, and the music is delicate almost to a fault--a wisp of piano here, a muttering of acoustic guitar there, melodies half-whispered as if they were afraid to step too much into the light. And though Nick Drake or (more recently) Leslie Feist can turn this approach into a gossamer dream of a song, here the tunes early on Science teeter on the edge of formlessness. Just when you're about to nod off with your headphones on, along comes "U," structured and delivered like a slow-jam Prince B-side (even the title seems like a salute to the Purple One's signature English abridgements), and suddenly Science moves from soporific to sensuous. Let's keep our fingers crossed for future albums that tap more of Thomas Dybdahl's structured side, letting his obvious depth of soul show itself to the world. --Ben Heege

My first introduction to this smooth and original singer & songwriter and a good one that is. It took a couple of listens before I was totally hooked to the overall mood of the album. The album includes a close to perfect four song set that starts with song number five, Dice, and continues with Always, U and This Year. It's almost as if Mr Dybdahl stands in the corner of your living room - or bedroom - while he holds the microphone very close to his mouth and sings a mix of quiet folk and gentle soul. It pays to really to listen to this album.

This guy's got a knack for pulling the heart strings. Although my fiancee calls him 'lay your body down by the fire' music--and several of the songs do lean that way--in my view this guy is focused on recapturing feelings that have been a) long buried or b) should have existed but never did. The first two songs make moves that way, the album then segues into a bit more introspective realm before coming out strong with "This Year," "Maury the Pawn" and, my favorite, "Be A Part." Don't miss this last song, it's a killer for the moody day. Check out his album _Someday You'll Dance For Me, New York_ as well...
