The best thing about this kit is the plastic case! The tools are terrible...the vise has some edges that are rough enough to cut yourself on and will wear out quickly; the hackle pliers are rough and cut the hackle; the hair stacker is made so poorly that it doesn't work at all; the scissors, bobbin & bobbin threader are marginally OK. The materials are sub-standard at best. The accompanying DVD doesn't give good instruction. For anyone wanting to get started in fly tying, trying to learn using this "deluxe" kit will surely discourage them in a hurry! I'm a volunteer with Project Healing Waters and the VA Center we work with purchased 9 of these kits to teach fly tying to disabled veterans. It was a total waste of money.

I got this kit for Christmas. Before that I had never tied a fly. When I fist got this kit I thought it was great. Now that I have had some time to tie some flies with it and research a little about fly tying I have found it not so great. The hackle that it comes with doesn't work well for the hook size it comes with(10,12,and 14). Also the hooks aren't very good. The vise is really cheap too, as far as the construction goes. I tied some pheasant tail nymphs with it and they came out well, but not the Adams( because of the hackle). If you want to buy a fly tying kit try going to Cabela's website. There's seem to come with better tools and materials. I think there prices might be better too, but I could be wrong.

I don't understand why the other buyers had such bad reviews for this product. I have already tied a number of flies with it and the tools are great. Fly tieing is an ART!!! and not for the heavy handed or the lets get it done now. This product does everything it says it will do. It has enough product to get you started and more. I can find nothing wrong with this product... Thank you ... There are other kits out there but you will pay more for them and some of them are not as nice as this one. Good Trout Hunting.
