Overall, I found this course to be quite enriching, mainly because of the sweeping panorama of its scope, which includes a very broad array of ideas in math and science. Framing these ideas in their socio-historical context was a significant added plus.

Goldman is an enthusiastic lecturer - maybe too enthusiastic for some, but fine for me. And more importantly, he has decades of experience with this material, so he knows his stuff, and it shows.

One precaution is that the course may be a bit difficult to absorb for those who aren't already at least somewhat familiar with the subject matter, so one might say that a prerequisite for the course is minimal scientific literacy. But for those who meet that prerequisite, I would highly recommend the course as an enriching and enjoyable learning experience. This is definitely a course I'll go through again.

I have just finished listening to this course today. When I started it I picked it because I just wanted to try one of these "Great Courses" out. I didn't know what I was getting into when I began, and I was hooked from the opening lecture!

Professor Goldman started out by identifying a core principle that defined the starting point, and then proceeded to blaze through history, bringing out most of the major scientific concepts of the western world. He put in place the chronology, and helped to connect the dots as to why those great scientific minds attacked the problems of their day, The entire topic is fascinating if you are open to learning a bit about history, science, and the great minds behind the state of progress in our world today.

I highly recommend the lectures, and I believe that Professor Goldman's delivery will keep you interested through out the entire series.

When one looks at a 500 page plus book by Betrand Russell about the history of science and philosophy one is usually reluctant to start reading it. Yet with CD set, or the DVD set which I saw, there is no need to wait. Prof. Goldman provides a course that only an expert, a master, can deliver. If you happen "think you have a pretty good idea" about the history of science, just wait until you experience the details and cogency of these lectures. So detailed they merit a second viewing or second listening. I saw Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" TV series some years ago, but this is on a whole other level. Let "Great Courses" and their specially selected professors do the hard work of going through thousands of pages of historical text to find the highlights. Well worth a trip to the library or Amazon purchase.
