My 6 year old received this kit for Christmas and was very excited to make her own gum. I really liked that the booklet had a very educational introduction. We were able to make 6 gumballs from one recipe so it is a little time consuming for such a small amount of product. I would maybe double or triple the recipe next time. However, my daughter was very pleased with how her gumballs turned out and enjoyed the taste. I had to help a good bit with the whole process because it is quite messy and when the gum gets thick, it is hard to stir. She was able to help a lot though with every step of the process.

The first step in the gum-making process is to gather all your ingredients for your particular recipe, to measure them out, and to put them into individual cups. This is a waste of time as it is just as easy to measure out the ingredients when you need them, you don't need all the powdered sugar that is told to be measured, and the corn syrup is nearly impossible to accurately pour back out of the cup and into the mixture. The only ingredient that needs to be measured out ahead of time is the gum base. Be sure to put this in a DISPOSABLE container as you will not want to have to scrape your dishes clean. Also, it is helpful to use a DISPOSABLE stir stick to mix up the gum. We used a disposable chop stick.

As other reviewers have mentioned, it takes MUCH longer to melt the gumballs than the recommended 10-20 secs. I believe we probably heated them a total of minute and a half before we actually got a gummy texture.

When kneading the gum, I found it helpful to lay down plastic wrap on the work surface so I did not have to worry about a sticky gooey counter top.

If you have some time, this is a fun project. Just be sure to take common sense precautions to protect your dishes and counter and you will have far less stress with it.

My 6 year old son loves gum, so I thought this would be a good toy for him for Christmas. All 3 of my children ended up loving it. They each made their own flavor and it was very easy to do. It did take longer to melt the gum pellets than the instructions say, but no big deal. All parents tell their kids not to play with their gum, but with this kit, you get to play with it during the kneading process. After they were done, we rolled it in saran wrap. I've heard them proudly telling their little friends that they made their own gum :) It tasted pretty good, too.

My daughter received this for Christmas and was very excited to get started. My daughter (10yo) and her friend (12yo) opened the package with excitement and got started. The very first bag they opened was the gum base. I say gum base because that was what was printed on the label. After opening package I found that it actually contained something that looked like gum base but smelled like burnt wood and a corpse. I am not kidding. The foul smell that wafted from the bag made us all gag. Much to my dismay, the girls proceeded with the eternal optimism of youth. After following the recipe for blueberry gum to the letter, they wound up with a wad of, what can only be described as, foul odored, viscous, left over, JB Weld. They finally gave up and threw it all in the trash. After sitting down and looking back over the experience, my daughter smelled her hand, it also smelled as if she were turning into a zombie as she sat there. Maybe this was a fluke but there was nothing in the package that should go into the mouth of any human being.

Terrible product. We tried everything possible to make chewable gum out of this, but it was so incredibly hard no ne could chew it. Sadly my money was wasted & I threw it away. I don't know if there was an issue in the shipping or storage of our box and the items inside went bad...either way, I would not buy another or recommend it to anyone else.

I purchased two of these, one for a 12 year old boy and one for an 8 year old boy. I actually thought the 12 year old would enjoy it more than the 8 year old, but I might have been wrong. The personality and curiosity of the boy comes into play with this kit. If your child has no interest in finding out about how things are made and how things work I don't recommend this. But if you have a curious child that enjoys finding out about things this is a good kit. It comes with everything to make gum and I actually chewed some of the gum my grandson made. It was flavorful, very chewy and was great for blowing bubbles and making loud popping noises. It does need adult supervision and muscles. It was somewhat complicated, but as stated previously, the boys now know what is in gum and how to make it. You can make traditional flavors or crazy flavors, depending on your personality and daring. A good change from all the video games everyone owns.

My daughter was super excited to try this kit. She loves a project. The resulting "gum" was hard and tasteless. The process was very messy. Not a great project.

Bought as a science experiment for my 3 year old. She loved making her own gum! Easy to use and definitely worth it!

I purchased this kit for my 9 yr old son who is obsessed with gum. My little 5 yr old also likes gum so I figured this would be great for the both of them. I was prepared to do most of the gum making and didn't mind if the end result is something my kids can enjoy. Well, I can honestly say I did ALL of the work as there really isn't anything about this process that is "child friendly" and Im being very honest. The gum base is EXTREMELY messy and difficult to work with. I did thankfully use a disposable bowl because there's no way to get it clean. Also the gum base only stays pliable for maybe a minute so I finally had to boil water and keep the bowl sitting over the pot while I worked. And by the way the other reviewers are not exaggerating when they say the gum base smells like burnt wood! In fact my 9 yr old said "mommy this gum smells like Bar B Q"! It really does stink bad! After some trial and error I finally got the end result. The only reason I even gave this 2 stars was 1 for the little educational part in the book, and 2 for the flavor packets that did seem to accurately taste as described. But even though the flavorings tasted ok when you first begin to chew on the gum, within seconds the flavor was completely gone and all you tasted was the nasty gum base. My kids would literally chew on a piece for Im not kidding maybe 1 minute and spit it out! And as for "saving" any of your creations to enjoy later.....forget it! Once you put the finished product in the zip lock baggy within 15-20min its like a ROCK again! So how can a kid go back later and chew on this?! Its ridiculous!
I really cant believe this product was marketed to children! There are so many issues with this product I doubt Ive listed them all.
