My 9 year old grandson LOVES science- He was so excited to do this. I enjoyed helping. The clear phosphate grew crystals almost overnight. However while watching him carefully measure the colored phosphate- THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH for the instructions. I had him use what he had a NOTHING ever grew- nothing at all. So much for the promise of growing "ruby" looking crystals. This could have been fun except for the careless packaging and poor quality control of the manufacturer. What a disappointment. Don't waste your money- choose something else.

We bought this a couple of years ago. My boys, now 11 and 13, only used it once... although it came with lots of contents to make more.
Crystals aren't really that realistic... not like inside a geode or anything. They look more like dyed rock salt.
