Outstanding Book - Best Scientific Football to Date, August 8, 2007
This review is from: Scientific Football 2007 (Paperback)
This review is for two sets of people.
1. For those who have read previous versions of Scientific Football --- This year's book reads more like an improved SF 2005 than a book similar to SF 2006. I personally enjoyed SF 2005 more because it contained more of KC's excellent analysis and brought a little more color to his unique metrics. He admits in the intro that unlike SF 2005, he wanted to mention players when he had something to add other than only metrics which could be obtained by looking at his charts (which admittedly is still every player you've heard of in the NFL and probably some you haven't). As a result, there is more analysis and an attempt to explain why players had the metrics they did, not to mention more of KC's humor. If you liked any previous version of Scientific Football, you will probably agree that this is his best effort yet.
2. For those who have never read Scientific Football: Plain and simple, if you love the NFL and want to go beyound typical football stats you can see anywhere, not to mention get great analysis on players, most coaches, and teams that you won't find elsewhere, you will love this book. He has developed his own set of stats (metrics) to give more detail about the performance of NFL players. There's a good 150 pages devoted to these in-depth metrics. The meat of the book for myself is where KC writes about every team, describing what the teams were doing as a whole, on offense, on defense, and then breaking down players and explaining what the metrics showed about their play (note this is only for QB's, TE's, WR's, and DB's). This is a very readable part of the book and spans more pages than the metrics sections. KC is an excellent writer with a great sense of humor. I'm the type of guy who reads about everything he can get his hands on about his favorite team, and reading that team's section I still learned new things about players I have been watching for years.
I highly recommend this book.
