Editorial Reviews

Scientific Writing is a fresh look at the scientific article for writers whose success might depend on their readers. The author illustrates his points with ample short stories, examples, quizzes, and diagrams ... This book is a good resource for writers, both beginning and experienced, and for teachers of scientific writing and editing. The methods for evaluating the structure, movement, and continuity of a paper from the perspective of the reader are valuable for writers, peer reviewers, and editors. And last but not least, this book might help editors avoid unintentionally creating obstacles for readers through common editing practices. --Science Editor

More About the Author

My first name is French, because I am, and unashamedly so.
I spent a quarter of my present life with a great American company: Apple Computer, in its Advanced Technology Group, promoting the work of its scientists to worldwide audiences. For Apple, I also ran a Singapore research Centre in IT. For Singapore, I hosted a TV morning program on IT. I now spend time writing and training scientists worldwide, but in particular in the many research institutes of the Agency for Science Technology And Research (A*STAR). I live in San Jose, California.
My latest interest is to help scientists evaluate their scientific paper by themselves (and with the assistance of kind readers) prior to submission to a journal. To that effect, and with the help of Dr Tomi Kinnunen and computer scientists from the university of Joenssu in Finland, I am happy to announce a new writing assessment tool aptly named Scientific Writing Assistant - in short SWAN (the swan is the national bird of Finland). SWAN is a java applet that works on Mac, PC, and Linux computers. The tool is free. To use it to best effect, it is appropriate to watch the videos on the companion DVD included in the second edition of the book "Scientific Writing 2.0 - a Reader's and Writer's Guide" With Writing Diagnosis Tool for MAC and PC.

If you are looking for a good guide book on scientific reading and writing, this is the answer to your request. This book will guide you step by step in getting the best out of your findings. It highlights a whole new set of personal skills, which can be acquired. This book starts with a reading toolkit. This toolkit provides the recipe to sustain the reader's attention and ensure continuous reading. The hands-on techniques Lebrun proposes are clear, practical, and proven to produce results in terms of clarity, conciseness, fluidity, organization, and convincing power of your writing. What is also unique in this book, is the collection of real life fun-to-read stories that reinforce the learning process. The second part of the book is where the writing process is described following a suggestive metaphor: the abstract is the heart of a paper, visuals are its voice, etc. The creativity in this book is seen throughout, even in its index section where qualities of writing are the main index categories under which the various methods to achieve them are gathered.

To all I would say, this is the book for learning how good reading and good writing is. I truly enjoyed reading it, and refer to it frequently throughout my process of writing scientific articles. This book is the "translational toolkit" for good scientific data, from the bench to the readers.

I am a senior graduate student majoring in biology. I found this book extremely helpful especially for a senior graduate student--who has some writing experience but still somewhat at loss of how to do scientific writing. This book is also very humorous and fun to read, in addition to its many practially useful tips and hints.
