The Scientist was an excellent choice as a single release from Coldplay's 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. Who hasn't had a relationship where logic and reason fought with sentiment and heart?

Lead singer Chris Martin declares a singular truth in "Nobody said it was easy. No one ever said it would be this hard..."

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars actually, due to great B-sides

This is the second single from "Rush of Blood to the Head". "The Scientist" is the A side, a mid-tempo piano-driven ballad. As a song, it doesn't do all that much for me, I thought it to be one of the lesser tracks on the album. (Check out the incredible video, though...)

The Single/EP version is the edit -- a radio cut that loses the piano intro (and sadly is the poorer for it.) Still, it's a fabulous song and worth owning the CD for all by itself.

However, you won't want to miss out on hearing the two added (heretofore unreleased) B-Sides, 1.36 and I Ran Away. The former is a hotter, more rocking piece than you'd usually hear from Coldplay, owing its roots to Ash frontman Tim Wheeler who provides additional guitar for this piece. But the final number (I Ran Away) is the stand-out song on this CD. According to Chris Martin, this one nearly made it on "Rush of Blood". It's recognizably Coldplay while taking their sound in a slightly different direction that's appealing enough you have to follow. It's one of those songs that gets in your head. Lamenting how fear drove him from a love open to him, he declares, "Everyone I know says I'm a fool to let you be. Everyone I know says it's a stupid thing to do." We can't help but relate. Great guitar too. Jon Buckland is definitely the next David Gilmour.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars actually, due to great B-sides, April 14, 2003

This is the second single from "Rush of Blood to the Head". "The Scientist" is the A side, a mid-tempo piano-driven ballad. As a song, it doesn't do all that much for me, I thought it to be one of the lesser tracks on the album. (Check out the incredible video, though...)

The B sides are far more interesting. "1:36" (which actually lasts 2:02) is one of the hardest rocking tracks ever from Coldplay, and Coldplay has performed it regularly at gigs. It starts off with a heavy guitar riff which continues throughout the song. I found it instantly recognizable, but it took me a while to place it: it is the EXACT same riff as the title track of AC/DC's "Ballbreaker", check it out!

"I ran away" is also a mid-tempo song (guitar-driven, though), and in my opinion a much better song than "The Scientist". In all, Coldplay has released better singles, but "1:36" is the curiosity that will make Coldplay fans seek out this single.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing !!, March 1, 2003

The Scientist (besides In My Place), is one of the standout tracks of A Rush Of Blood. So it is only fitting that it recieves it's own single. The best song on this album however, is I Ran Away. The track is gorgeous. It was not released worldwide, though it should have been. It is easily one of the best Coldplay songs so far, and I am a huge fan of all Coldplay songs. If you love Coldplay you must get this song as soon as possible!

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like Coldplay, August 3, 2003

1.36 is a strange little song, but not bad. Chris' vocals sound pretty weird on it. But the real gem here is "I Ran Away," which is a really great song. I don't see why it wasn't on "Rush of Blood to the Head." And of course, The Scientist is a very good song.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Ran Away, October 8, 2003

I bought this CD in August because I wanted to hear the unreleased songs that weren't on "A Rush of Blood to the Head." I was pleasantly surprised. 1.36 is definately a departure from Coldpaly's norm, much more rock-like than their other stuff, but the greatness here lies in "I Ran Away," which in my opinion, would have been great as a 12th song on "A Rush..." A must for any and all Coldplay fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars money well spent!, December 6, 2002
this is one of my favorite cd singles by any band. The Scientist is of course brilliant, but I Ran Away blew me away. I love b-sides because they always seem to contain a hidden gem. 1.36 is great too, it is a different sound than what I am used to hearing by Coldplay but nevertheless enjoyable. I highly recommend this single to those who are not sure. BUY IT! :D

5.0 out of 5 stars A music fan from Canada is a complete moron!, September 19, 2003

I was so angry when I read the review "A Chore to listen through" The Scientist is truly excellent. Coldplay are anything but boring and conventional. I Ran Away is also really good, I thought it was definitely good enough to go on A Rush Of Blood To The Head.

5.0 out of 5 stars exactly what i expected, June 10, 2003
I believe that Coldplay is the band with the best b-sides period. All of their b-sides could be compiled into a full-length album and it would be as good as any of their other albums. I had formed this opinion before buying this particular single, and I got exactly what i expected. Two great new songs. Again, all of Coldplay's singles contain a couple of gems.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'I Ran Away' is the sole reason to buy this, March 2, 2005
By
This review is from: Scientist (Audio CD)
The Scientist is a very good song, I agree, but the best track on this disc and out of all of Coldplay's work has to be I Ran Away.

The song is just so awesome. The guitar takes you to another place, the percussion is excellent, and the lyrics go perfectly with the song. If you like Coldplay, you must get ahold of this song as soon as possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Must-have for any coldplay fan, February 15, 2003

This review is from: Scientist (Audio CD)
I only give it 4 stars because I don't like to give 5 stars to anything unless it has life-altering capabilities (e.g. OK Computer).

The live version of "In My Place" is nice, but nothing unusual. The 3rd track, "1.36" is an energetic number, but nothing spectacular. The fourth song, "I Ran Away," is pure and beautiful. Although it's production is a little raw, this song is the sole reason you must buy this single. In my opinion, Coldplay still hasn't put out a bad song, from the Safety EP, to both studio albums, to every last b-side. It's ALL good. Also, make sure you buy this particular release, because it's the only one with the live version of "In My Place."

By the way, I just saw Coldplay in concert last week. If you ever get a chance to see them live, you have to go. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
