The book is a true gem - very comprehensive and well-written. It is replete with examples (both good and bad) of various facets of and practices in scientific writing.

Very useful resource, November 8, 2001
This review is from: Scientist's Handbook for Writing Papers and Dissertations (Prentice Hall Advanced Reference Series Physical and Life Sciences) (Hardcover)
This book was recommended to me when I was in graduate school and I was taking a summer course on writing dissertations.
This book is very detailed and has a science focus. It is really a book on technical writing and it applies to anyone who is writing a paper with tables, charts or figures. Many in the social sciences will benefit.
I found it helpful to figure out how to write an abstract. After reading the abstract section, I was amazed at how many working papers I saw did not follow her advice and were the worse for it.
I am sorry to see it currently out of print, but it is worthwhile to track it down either used or at a library. I wished I had gotten sooner so I could have used it for term and research papers before I was working on my dissertation.
