5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, no matter your philosophy/religion
I've read this book a few years ago and I'm about to read it for the second time. I'm not a scientologist nor do I plan to become one. I've never read any other scientology book or pamphlet.

As far as philosopy is concerned, this book didn't reveal anything especially new or astounding to me.

This is an other book I was forced to buy and read when I joined the "Church" of Scientology. I had to read it with a dictionary next to me, and I'm not stupid or uneducated, but the book is full of the most complicated words you can possibly find and explains nothing in great detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, no matter your philosophy/religion, October 19, 2009
I've read this book a few years ago and I'm about to read it for the second time. I'm not a scientologist nor do I plan to become one. I've never read any other scientology book or pamphlet.

As far as philosopy is concerned, this book didn't reveal anything especially new or astounding to me.

The value of it is in the manner in which it teaches one to control their thoughts instead of allowing their thoughts to control them. If you have a phobia, problems with procrastination, a goal you wish to reach, a tendency to give yourself negative feedback, or if you just wish to change for other reasons, this book effectively teaches you to (to put it as simply as possibly) have your CONSCIOUS mind control your subconscious mind. For too many people, the opposite is true. Do you want to start your own business, but have a nagging voice tell you that you've never been successful and shouldn't expect to be now? Do you consciously say that you will do something important today, and your subconscious tells you it can wait? Why are you allowing your subconscious mind to stop you from what you consciously decided you want to do? This book really helps you in addressing this problem.

Again, I'm not a scientologist and don't intend to become one. Wisdom doesn't come in the vehicle of only one religion, one language, one culture, one philosophy. Don't allow your mistrust of the religions or cultures of others impede your acceptance of wisdom.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Understanding Of Life, November 5, 1997
By A Customer
This book goes over the basics of Scientology and explains them in a fascinating and practical way.

This was the first book I read on the subject and I think what I enjoyed about it the most was that I could try out the ideas for myself. I didn't just have to believe or accept anything, the book challenged me to think for myself.

The datum that the hightest purpose in the universe is the creation of effect explained to me a great deal about the behavior of myself and others and actually made me much more tolerant of others.

The chapter on games and how they apply to life enabled me to see where I was getting involved with activities that were not what I really wanted and I was then able to make changes so I was doing what I wanted and I felt much happier with myself and my life.

I could go on, but I would fill up the whole page.

I will end by saying that I recommend this book highly. Read it and make your life go the way you want it to.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for those on a spiritual quest..., February 3, 2001
This book is not light reading. I do think it is a vital book for anyone who is actively searching through different spiritual philosophies, looking for some answers to the basic questions of existence.

Chapters in this book discuss freedom and why we have barriers. The relationship between the mind, spirit and body. How we can be spiritual beings, yet are in a position where we have limited knowledge and abilities.

This is really intense stuff - and the meat and potatoes of true spiritual philosophy. I find this book to be challenging, yet inspirational to me every time I read it.

I recommend this book to anyone who is awake enough as a spiritual being to pose the questions, "Why am I here?" and "How can I improve my situation?"

Happy reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reality Check, April 14, 2003
By A Customer
I am sooo sick of people bashing Scientology, saying it's a cult or whatever else they makeup.
I read this book, Fundamentals of Thought, and had for the first time in my life felt that finally, someone had some concrete information on how life works.
AS I was reading it, I was told by other people who were not Scientologists about how 'bad' it all is and thus my viewpoint was a little blurred by there lies. Finally, I asked myself whether or not I wanted the truth or a bunch of BS.

Fundamentals of Thought is amazing. It's unbelievably logical and doesn't go in circle like some philosophers do.
It gets to the point, and by god, it hits stuff on the nail. You can actually read the book, and go ahead and apply it to any situation in your life!
Scientology is meant for people who ask lots of questions and are not satisfyied until everything makes sense.
If you've been a victim of people telling you BS about the subject or are just intreguid at life, read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I almost gave this book 3 stars, until I applied it., October 15, 1999
By A Customer
I looked at this book because I had heard about it and wanted to see some data (for myself) about the subject of Scientology. I was tired of reading other people's points of view and really tired of hearing the complainers. I was beginning to get the idea that L.R. Hubbard was a combination of Hitler, Genghis Khan and a psychiatrist rolled into one and that the Scientology organization was a combination of the Gestapo, the CIA and psychiatry. I couldn't believe that anyone or any group could be that evil.

After I looked at the material in this book, I realized two things:

1) that the complainers are just complainers and probably complain about everything (and probably think that they are know-it-alls). I know a few people like that and they are pretty useless.

2) the material in the book made very good sense but seemed pretty simplistic. It agreed with some other things that I have studied, conflicted with some others and some of it was new. I saw that these Scientology basics were beneficial and that a lot of people could feel better about life in general after just reading the book much less trying to apply the concepts.

That is where my opinion changed. I would have given this book about three stars just for the feel-good-after-reading effect but no more, because of the simplicity. I saw some fundemental (pun intended) truths but it was not complex material. Then, I started looking at all of the references that I have heard in the past about "Keep It Simple, Stupid", "the simple solution is the best solution", etc.

So I looked through the material again, picked some areas and looked at people and situations with those ideas in mind. I started seeing that the infomation was valid, from person to person and in every situation.

Then I started USING the information and that is when I realized that simple doesn't mean that it's silly or unimportant. The results that I saw in some of my relationships and in how I felt were, in some cases, nothing short of wonderful. I started to see that I was working with really good data about LIFE. I passed this book on to my wife and my best friend. They also thought that it was a bit simplistic (my friend more so than my wife) but I had them look at the ideas again, gave them some examples from my recent experience and they both gave "using it" a try. They got the same kind of results. We've gotten to the point where we recently found ourselves discussing last week's good experiences with the information instead of talking about work or movies. I like it!

Needless to say, I now HIGHLY recommend this book. I'm looking for another one like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed the book. Important for one who studies philosophy., September 13, 1998
I liked the book very much. As one who has studied many different religions and philosophies this book is like a cool mountain spring swim on a warm day. Personally, this book expanded my own wisdom of our boundaries of the universe, both physical and spiritual, and made my own search for God and my spiritual independence lighter - less serious. Informative and enlightening, but don't pick it up if your heart is not up to adventure that could be addictive!
