Wonderful story.... Sensual,
By Judy "book reader" (Cincinnati, ohio United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scions: Insurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) (Mass Market Paperback)
The sensual and thrilling Scions series continues in Insurrection by Patrice Michelle.
PI Landon Rourke has lived his life separate from his pack, he is the typical lone wolf. He does have a few close friends but no one really touches his soul unlike Kaitlyn. Landon has always watched over Detective Kaitlyn McKinney. He is drawn to her and feels the need to protect her. Detective Kaitlyn McKinney is a straight arrow, she has followed her dad into the job of protecting and serving the public. Responding to a police call late one night she runs into Landon. Something about this man calls to her and she can no longer fight the all consuming attraction she feels. Landon and Kaitlyn join forces when there are unexplainable murders in and around the city. One Kaitlyn becomes a target Landon will put aside everything to keep her safe. Kaitlyn has for a long time depended on herself and its so tempting to let Landon shelter her. Their attraction explodes with a passion neither realized was between them. But will Kaitlyn feel the same way when some secrets Landon is keeping are revealed. Patrice Michelle draws you into the world of werewolves and vampires like no other author. She creates a world that is unique and intriguing. Landon and Kaitlyn journey to love and understanding is sensual and moving. I can't wait to find out what is around the corner for this series.

A CK2S Recommended read! Police Detective Kaitlyn McKinney has been called out on her first real case as detective to investigate a burned body in a local park. When she gets there, she discovers this body is nothing like she has ever seen before. It looks vaguely humanoid but what is it? Landon Rourke suffers daily for a mistake he made several years ago, and his self imposed penance is to play secret guardian to Kaitlyn. A long ago prophecy stated there would someday be peace between vampires and Lupreda - werewolves. This murder throws darkness on the pending outcome of that prophecy. Now he and Kaitlyn are working together to find answers and he begins to see the destiny laid out for him. What will Kaitlyn do when she discovers the terrible truth Landon hides? Landon and Kaitlyn's story is incredibly emotional, heart wrenchingly beautiful. It brought tears to my eyes, at least three times, as discoveries were made. Landon feels so guilty over past events that watching him finally come to terms with what happened, and learning to forgive himself makes for an incredible story. Kaitlyn has her own secrets, not quite understanding why she has these special gifts, but when she learns the truth about her heritage, everything finally makes sense and she is stunned at what is uncovered. Landon and Kaitlyn are two halves of one whole, and neither can find peace with their pasts until they come together. Their relationship also awakens long buried feelings and when they give in to their attraction, fireworks are sure to explode. Patrice Michelle is winning me over with her fascinating Scions trilogy. I loved Resurrection and I think I love Insurrection even more! Jachin puts in an appearance also, which gives us a chance to catch up with a few old friends. We discover so much more about the history of the Lupreda, a rather ironic twist after learning the vampire history in the previous book and how that impacted the birth of the werewolves. Even more fascinating secrets come to light as well and I am waiting with baited breath for book 3, Revelations. © Kelley A. Hartsell, April 2008. All rights reserved.

Awesome SCIONS addition!,

Patrice Michelle has been an "auto-buy" for me ever since I discovered her "Kendrian Vampire" stories in eBook, (along with her "Bad in Boots" cowboys, yum! ;-P).
Amazingly, she ups the bar with each book she writes. I'm pleasantly surprised how each book is better than the last, when she was so strong to begin with! Both the hero and heroine in SCIONS: INSURRECTION are appealing and multi-dimensional with awesome depth of character. Landon is an unbelievably alpha, sexy, and intense Were- yet his feelings of guilt and his fear for his mate make him more human. He is my favorite kind of alpha, the kind that is always on the edge of out of control, and loves and cares for his woman above all else. Kaitlyn is truly clever, witty, and incredibly (but not foolishly) brave, even when she discovers she is more than she ever thought was even possible... The chemistry between the two sets the pages on fire and the verbal exchanges are engaging, absorbing, sensual, and laugh-out-loud funny at times. The emotional obstacles they had to overcome were very real, and their reactions believable. This was a very fast paced read that blew me away with its creativity, and the sensuality that is rife between Landon and Kaitlyn. Wonderfully, there was never a clichéd transformation in Landon or in Kaitlyn, I didn't feel like they fell in love only because she was his mate and they're genetically "destined" for each other, (unfortunately that is a sensation I am left with in a lot of Were stories). I totally enjoyed Patrice's previous book in the SCIONS: series, but in Insurrection she reaches a new intensity that drew me in and would not let go. The idea of two people that are so lonely discovering a bond that is so profoundly sexual, and yet so much more, resonated with me. Patrice bridges the strength of the old style "been there-done that" paranormal with a new twist and a freshness that sets her far apart from the norm! Don't miss this book!

Well-written second volume in this series!,
By Renee C. Mulhare "matrixrefugee77" (MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Scions: Insurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have an especial fondness for the "Scions" mini-series. It reminds me not a little of the "Underworld" movies, in terms of atmosphere and world-building, but it's a lot better-written, for one thing! Presenting vampires and werewolves as the result of genetic experimentation gone amok is one of the more original explanations I've seen for it and almost puts it in the realm of science-fantasy.
This second offering is as intricate and emotionally-charged as the first. There's a few awkward spots: the story appears to take place maybe ten years into the future, but mention is made of things grabbing at people in a haunted house attraction in an old warehouse, when it's no longer permissible for this sort of jolt in that kind of attraction (due to lawsuits for cases of groping). But I love the May-September romance between Landon and Kaitie and how carefully he keeps his true nature from her, and also how she deduces what he is... and his mysterious connection with her father, who -- it seemed -- died from a dog attack... Or was it just a dog? And what is the mysterious creature she finds burned to death in a park? And furthermore, what is this other were-creature that seems to hold the key to fullfilling the prophecy that ties the races of paranormals and humans together...? I'm eagerly anticipating how that turns out!

Scions,
This review is from: Scions: Insurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) (Mass Market Paperback)
Kaitlyn McKinney's first assignment as a police detective is to investigate a possible connection between the mafia and vampire hunters called Garotters. The Garotters are acquiring pulsar guns that can be used to kill vampires. Private investigator Landon Rourke often helps the police solve their cases. On his own, Landon is investigating the disappearance of zerkers from his pack. Zerkers are werewolves stuck between shape-shifted forms. Landon has known Kaitlyn for a long time. He is strongly attracted to her, but he's a werewolf and Kaitlyn doesn't know it. Landon has another secret he's hiding from Kaitlyn as well, and this one will definitely drive her away from him, so although his desire for her is strong, he needs to keep his distance.
When Kaitlyn becomes a target, Landon is forced to stay close to her. Keeping his intense desire in check becomes increasingly more difficult, then impossible to deny. As the danger mounts, Kaitlyn's life is thrown into turmoil. While she is facing killers, Landon's secrets are revealed, and then she makes a shocking discovery about herself. What happens next will change Kaitlyn's life forever. Landon is haunted by his past. When he finally allows himself to give in to his deep desire for Kaitlyn, the result is incredibly heartwarming and passionate. Kaitlyn is the perfect match for Landon. She can handle Landon's intensity and she gives him all the love he was desperately seeking. Landon and Kaitlyn face vampires, werewolves, and villains while fighting for their love. Insurrection is an exciting and creative story. Nannette reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed

SCIONS: INSURRECTION,
By
This review is from: Scions: Insurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) (Mass Market Paperback)
I very much enjoyed reading SCIONS: INSURRECTION. Although I hadn't read the first novel of the trilogy, SCIONS: RESURRECTIONS, I didn't have to read it in order to enjoy this story. It was entertaining and complete unto itself. But, after reading this one, I can't wait to read about how the story began and how it will end in the final novel SCIONS: REVELATION.
Patrice Michelle drew me into the story with her first sentence and kept me captivated until the end. I hated to put the book down and couldn't wait to pick it back up again. Romance, passion, and intrigue fills the pages. Before reading the book, I visited her website where she has excerpts from several novels available. These excerpts just made me eager to read more. The book is definitely Landon's Story, as the author refers to it. His thoughts, feelings, and point of view are used throughout the story. Patrice seamlessly transitions between the hero & the heroine's point of view. The sexual tension between Kaitlyn and Landon began building even before they met face-to-face. They don't consummate their relationship immediately, but the heat between them builds throughout the novel. Oh, and you will never believe the twists within the story. This book is a great read.

Five stars...
A recommended read. Scions Insurrection book two of the Scions series by Patrice Michelle takes up where Scions Resurrection left off. Only this story is focusing more on the sexy werewolf PI. Landon Rourke whom we first met in the earlier story. If possible this story is even better than the first, the characters especially that of Landon, the ultimate alpha male are extremely likable and well- rounded. The story line is especially interesting and while it would be helpful to read Scions Resurrection first this story is so well written that it could also be a stand-alone. There is also a very interesting twist to the story, that I would love to but can't divulge...

exhilarating contemporary romantic fantasy police procedural,
This review is from: Scions: Insurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) (Mass Market Paperback)
NYPD police officer Kaitlyn McKinney responds to a call about a fire in a Morningside Park. As she looks at the strange burned body, private investigator Landon Rourke arrives on the scene. He refuses to acknowledge her belief there is something odd about the corpse although she sees the obvious.
Landon hides from Kaitlyn that he is an exiled werewolf kicked out of his pack. He vows to keep the cop safe but hides his desire for her from her as he has since they first met. When two vampires attack her, Landon saves her life. As he continues to protect her, already half in love with one another before his diligence began, the pair fall totally in love. However since they are caught in the middle of a cold war turning hot between werewolves and vampires, safety and preventing a calamity comes before their desires. The sequel to SCIONS: RESURRECTION is an exhilarating contemporary romantic fantasy police procedural. The key to this engaging work is the paranormals seem genuine as the audience will believe that a lone werewolf and a human can fall in love while vampires try to take a bite out of the Big Apple. Got me hooked,
By
This review is from: Scions: Insurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) (Mass Market Paperback)
When I read the first book in this series I thought WOW, what a great book, then I read Insurrection, if Resurrection was a wow book, then Insurrection is a .... words fail me book, it's that good! What Ms. Michelle started in Resurrection she continues and then some in Insurrection. This story is about werewolves instead of vampires, but the tension and action are even more intense than before.
Humanity had a reason to fear vampires. But they didn't know about werewolves. Yet. When Detective Kaitlyn McKinney responds to a call about a strange lights and fire in a neighborhood park, she discovers something strange and dangerous. Landon Rourke is a werewolf, exiled from his pack and dedicated to keeping a protective watch over Kaitlyn. A prophecy has said that his kind and vampires would one day come to a truce. But that day has yet to come. Landon has his own past to deal with, too, involving Kaitie herself. A dark truth that has kept them apart for years. When Kaitlyn gets caught up in the battle between vampires and werewolves, their long-simmering attraction ignites. And in that attraction, they find the secret that will bring them together... The sexual tension between Landon and Katie is immense, filled with longing, tension and even conflict. The many fast paced action scenes kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. There is the conflict between Landon and pack members, between Landon and himself, and between him and Katie. You have to wonder how is he going to resolve at least some of that conflict. He does it in a very honorable way. The ending of thestory was a surprise to me as I never expected it, but I love the way it ended! The world building that started in Resurrection continues in Insurrection as Ms. Michelle continues to tell the story of a prophecy coming true. While it is possible to read just this book by itself, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Resurrection to get even more enjoyment from the over all story line. I can barely wait to see how Ms. Michelle brings the story to a close and brings the prophecy to fruition. My only problem was I can only give this story 5 stars, it deserve more.

Interesting Ideas,
By Tez Miller (Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews

The protag is a cop. In the first few chapters she talks on the phone whilst driving, calls for backup but doesn't wait for it, gets spooked at a lame commercial 'haunted' house, faints, and is rescued by the hero.
From that, you can automatically tell if this story is for you or not. Oh, and it has a prophecy. The author has some interesting ideas. I was fascinated with Kaitlyn's father's life. And if I followed correctly, vampires made werewolves in test tubes. I think. I didn't quite get it because it wasn't focused on as much as it should've been. There was a lot I didn't understand. What's a zerker? Is Musk form just another way of saying wolf form? Why does silver have to be a problem for werewolves; why can't they just be hurt/killed like normal animals in the wild; why this special rule? |
