3.0 out of 5 stars fun but doesn't live up to the hype; bad video quality
Perhaps it's a generation thing, because I think I would be more enthusiastic about this band if I were in my 20's instead of my 40's. I do think that their cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" is amusing and a couple of their other songs are catchy. Co-lead singiner Ana Matronic comes across as interesting in the many interview clips here, but it's strange that...

The Scissor Sisters DVD: We are the Scissor Sisters and So Are You! is just what the doctor ordered.

- It has a full concert of this dynamic and outlandish group
- All of their current videos
- Interviews with the group

- All sorts of other really fun stuff including at least one easter egg which is footage of lead singer Jake Shears getting dressed - in other words, you see Jake in his birthday suit!

For those of us a bit older who remember when MTV actually played videos (and non-rap videos at that) we yearn for this type of DVD.
The group is outlandish and entertaining.

This DVD is really great - go get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor and energy, May 5, 2005
This review is from: Scissor Sisters: We Are Scissor Sisters... and So Are You (DVD)
Despite the fact that their debut album provides their entire play list, Scissor Sisters manage to deliver a DVD collection that includes a full-length concert, several music videos, a documentary, and much more! This DVD reportedly includes some Easter eggs as well, for those with the patience or equipment to find that sort of thing.

The picture quality during the concert falters at times, but the sound quality is perfect, and that really matters the most in this case. Fans of this theatrical dance band will enjoy seeing how they interpret these already familiar songs on stage. Keep in mind that singer Jake Shears previously worked as a go-go dancer; or just think of Queen's Freddy Mercury with just as much peacock attitude but even more energy! All of the members bring their unique personalities to the show and the music. The ending number goes so far over the top that it seems like the Muppets crashing a live performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

The music videos capture the humor and energy of the band in other ways, allowing them to play with costumes, low-budget special effects, and silly plot lines. The documentary goes a long way in explaining the bizarre antics but immediate magnetism of this hot new band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Become A Scissor Sister- BUY THIS DVD!!!!, January 14, 2005
This review is from: Scissor Sisters: We Are Scissor Sisters... and So Are You (DVD)
The Scissor Sisters came out of nowhere this past year & released what I consider the best pop album of 2004- if not the best of the decade so far! Their unique sound combines pop, dance, funk, electronica, psychedelia, glam & disco into one stylish, outlandish, foot-stomping package. This DVD is an absolute must-have for fans or anyone craving fun, stylish, intelligent pop music.

The concert features the band playing live to a packed house at the Brighton Dome with a set list that includes every song from their debut album (except "Lovers In The Backseat"), plus 3 non-album songs. The Sisters open the show by tearing straight into "Take Your Mama," which sets the high-energy mode for the rest of the show, concluding with the rousing "Music Is The Victim," which turns into an all-out, onstage party. The show is filmed perfectly, with excellent sound & picture quality, not to mention the terrific light show & visuals.

For those of you who have not yet put a face to the band (it's not like MTV or VH1 would ever play a video anymore!), this is a perfect introduction to the hipster-glam world of the Scissor Sisters. Anyone who finds lead singer (& former stripper) Jake Shears attractive will find lots to love on this DVD. Jake shows off his well-toned body in just about every way possible here, from wearing nothing but a towel onstage (in a bonus performance of "Music Is The Victim"), to doing a striptease on the menu board. To describe Jake as flamboyant would be an understatement, but the Scissor Sisters are all about having fun. Back-up singer Ana Matronic, whose presence on the cd is often barely there, shows in concert how well she can not only hold her own, but even hold the show together. She & Jake play off of each other perfectly!

Also featured on the DVD is a band documentary, a featurette called "4Play Film," (an entertaining introduction to the band) & all 5 music videos. There is at least one hard-to-find easter egg on the disc, but I won't give away any juicy details. Check the band's website for further info.

As for the music videos, they're brilliant! What a shame that these innovative, stylish clips will never see the light of day on american television. If the Scissor Sisters had been around in 1985, they would have been huge MTV stars, but apparantly there is no airtime left for groundbreaking artists like them- just more episodes of The Real World & Pimp My Ride. So if you want to become a "Scissor Sister," go out & spend your ten bucks on this DVD & get to know Jake, Ana, & the rest of the band. It's worth every penny & more.

Very highly recommended, the full length concert footage is a must see. The Sisters rock! If you are not lucky enough to have them visit your city on tour, you can experience them live at home. I was very impressed. The extras are great, especially the background information on the band from the members themselves. Again, this comes very highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, April 7, 2006

This review is from: Scissor Sisters: We Are Scissor Sisters... and So Are You (DVD)
This DVD contains live footage of the Scissor Sisters in concert at the United Kingdom's [...] capital, Brighton. It also has the videos of their first few singles, missing only "Filthy Gorgeous". Originally ignored in their home country of the US, the Scissor Sisters were snapped up in the UK, where the British public have really taken them to their hearts, winning many awards at the Brits. The music is terrific, by turn both strident, relaxed, radical, soulful, poppy and very catchy. You definitely get the feeling that this band enjoy making music and performing. Why have the US been slow to catch on? Ask yourself why didn't "Brokeback Mountain" win the Best Picture Oscar, and you will be more than halfway there.

I was SCREAMING with laughter when I caught this segment on the Return To Oz band documentary. Ana Matronic is killing me! HA HA! This is a FABULOUS dvd (and CHEAP!). As if the cd weren't incredible enough, this release has a marvelously directed live film (love the opening Dolly Parton track; love the stage finale), terrific videos, a killer track playing when you select "Songs" on the menu, and other great, great stuff. The sound mixes are AWESOME, played over a home theater setup. The menus are very creative (especially Ana Matronic and Jake Shears' dances) and unlike many music dvds, this one is presented in ANAMORPHIC 16:9 WIDESCREEN! Terrific!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest, February 24, 2005

This review is from: Scissor Sisters: We Are Scissor Sisters... and So Are You (DVD)
This is one of the best bands to come along in a long time, especially if you are into bands from the 70s and 80s. Scissor Sisters is a combination of both. They are outrageous to watch and have a great beat to dance to. I don't know where they have been hiding, but I caught them on the Regis & Kelly show and immediately went out and bought their CD. When the DVD was released I rushed to the store and it is one of the best concerts I have purchased in a long time. The group won numerous awards on the Brits Award show this year. England has taken this group to their hearts and I think we should to. Like I wrote if you love the 70s and 80s, purchase the CD and the DVD. I don't think you will be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out There In The Best Possible Way, January 26, 2005
By
This review is from: Scissor Sisters: We Are Scissor Sisters... and So Are You (DVD)
First off, if you love Scissor Sisters, this is definintely a must. It is a very revealing (in more ways than one) look at the band, both on stage, and through documentary and videos. The concert itself is outlandish. At 78 minutes, the band is in great form, and the sound of the dvd itself is great (there are three options: 5.1 Dolby, DTS, and 2.0). For this price alone, a must for every fan.

If you are not a fan, but like what you may have heard on the radio, you may very well be after seeing this. The band is truly fun loving, and anything goes on this dvd, and usually does.

The much rumoured easter eggs on the dvd can be found easilly if you have title access on your dvd player (check out title 14 for one that gives new meaning to the word revealing).

All in all a great companion to the cd.

If you love camp, dance music then this is the DVD to buy. Scissors Sisters are all that and more. Caught them on the TV one morning and went out and bought their CD. Loved it. When the DVD came out, bought it and loved it as well. This group is great to watch as well as listen to. Caught the Brit Awards the other night and Scissor Sisters opened the show with a bang. And to top it off, won 3 awards as well. Britian has embraced Scissor Sisters and now it is our turn.

This review is from: Scissor Sisters: We Are Scissor Sisters... and So Are You (DVD)
This DVD's a great introduction to the band, containing everything from a complete live set, videos, interviews (the Muppets were an early influence?), a recitation of the poem "Jabberwocky," backstories -- and of course, bare-butt footage of Jake onstage in Spain. I've missed them live, but will certainly NOT pass up the opportunity next time 'round. For the Scissorhood, this one's a must have.

The only thing missing is the video for "Filthy/Gorgeous." Oh, well -- There's the enhanced CD IMPORT for that.
