5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Reading For Scleroderma Patients
This is a balanced and informative book, so much so that I am passing it on to my doctor with the recommendation that he tell all his scleroderma patients about it. I've learned a lot through the internet and by careful observation of what's going on with subtle physical changes we experience with scleroderma. This book does a great job of tying it all together in an...

1.0 out of 5 stars An extreme disservice to Scleroderma patients
Dr. Mayes's book gives a well-written account of how scleroderma progresses in a patient unabated. However, to subtitle this book "A Guide for Patients and Families" is grossly inaccurate. Dr. Mayes misses the mark when she fails to discuss or even mention antiboitic therapy as a treatment. Her condescending advice on coping with scleroderma was particularly...

5.0 out of 5 stars Highest Endorsement from International Scleroderma Network, March 14, 2001
By
This review is from: The Scleroderma Book: A Guide for Patients and Families (Hardcover)
As President of the International Scleroderma Network (www.sclero.org), this is one of my favorite books to recommend for all scleroderma patients and their family and friends.

Dr. Mayes is a world leader in the field of scleroderma and her clinic is a member of the international Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium (SCTC).

Moreover, Dr. Mayes is an extremely popular speaker at scleroderma events, due to her clear, friendly, and down-to-earth style. I have met her, and I have also heard from a great many of her patients, all of whom have spoken very highly of her.

If your life has been affected by scleroderma, GET THIS BOOK NOW. You'll be happy you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars I have Scleraderma, November 6, 2000

Being diagnosed with this disease was overwhelming for myself and my family. There were so many questions. Where were the answers? I was being treated by a doctor specializing in rheumatoid arthritis. I hit the internet and found a "specialist" in my metro. area. I am now under the care of Dr. Maureen Mayes. At this time her book had not yet been released. I feel lucky that I have her knowledge in treating scleraderma and in her book she can share that expertise with others. The book has been extemely helpful in explaining to family and friends what scleraderma is and how it can be treated.

Before this book my husband and I felt lost trying to find answers. It answered all of our questions from what lab work needed to be done to why I might be having certain symtoms. I even recommended this to my Docter to tell his other patients about. This is a must for everyone diagnosed and family alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and clearly written, October 20, 2001

This review is from: The Scleroderma Book: A Guide for Patients and Families (Hardcover)
As a nurse practitioner, I felt that the info in this book was very comprehensive... I also felt that the language was well written in commonly-used descriptive terms, so that any lay person could also understand the content. Very helpful info and practical advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A greatly needed resource, April 19, 1999
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Scleroderma Book: A Guide for Patients and Families (Hardcover)
This book's thorough coverage of the basics of scleroderma are something we patients have long been waiting to find on our bookstore shelves. For too long we've only been a short blurb in some general disease book with no more than a paragraph of information, some incredibly out-of-date. The gentle, readable style is enhanced by personal accounts of patient experiences, and one is left reassured and hopeful by Dr. Mayes' practical help on dealing with the disease today and confidence in the cure of tomorrow.

Some books about scleroderma are clearly written with the medical community in mind and are way to technical for the average person. This book is directed to the average person and wrote in a way that can be easily understood by those who do not have medical experience. I highly recommend this book to every person with scleroderma and to ever person that is interested in learning the facts about this disease. Get your copy today!
