This review is from: Scoff (Album) (MP3 Download)
Sub Pop Records is re-releasing Nirvana's 1989 debut, 'Bleach', and has added a disk of previously unreleased tracks to the album. "Scoff" was recorded at the band's 1990 show at Pine Street Theatre in Portland, and mixed from the original tapes by 'Bleach' and 'Incesticide' producer Jack Endino. This track meshes well with the rest of the raw and punky 'Bleach' material, back before Butch Vig gave the band a glossy, metallic sheen on 'Nevermind'.

I really dig this song. It's tight and powerful, and gives fans a chance to hear more of the pre-Nevermind Nirvana, back before grunge had taken over the airwaves and gotten commercial. On the lyrical side, Kurt seems to be taking out some anger at his father's alcoholism, or at least that what the song SEEMS to be about. I'm sure that's open to interpretation, as Kurt was pretty opaque with a lot of his lyrics.

I've heard a lot of live Nirvana bootlegs, and the production on this track puts them all out to the curb. Good stuff from a legendary band.
