5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Scofield Ever
The NKJV Scofield 3 has been out now for maybe, 5 years, now; and, in my opinion, is the best study Bible around, whether it be in NKJV as here, KJV, NASB, NIV, ESV, and coming soon, the HCSB. Greatly augmenting the original Scofield, it comes loaded with in-text maps, charts, and addenda, it is an extremely valuable Study Bible. Oxford has put in a lot of general helps...

2.0 out of 5 stars A Few Issues!
I wanted a NKJV for legibility and I loved the the individual divided verses(not paragraphs) and Jesus' red letters. BUT!! (The Scofield® Study Bible III, NKJV)

(1)According to the "Look Inside" it appears to have a ton of study notes, but it DOES NOT! There are a few pages scattered throughout that have some good info, but not the quantity or quality I was...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Scofield Ever, October 7, 2003

The NKJV Scofield 3 has been out now for maybe, 5 years, now; and, in my opinion, is the best study Bible around, whether it be in NKJV as here, KJV, NASB, NIV, ESV, and coming soon, the HCSB. Greatly augmenting the original Scofield, it comes loaded with in-text maps, charts, and addenda, it is an extremely valuable Study Bible. Oxford has put in a lot of general helps that former Scofields lacked. The Leather bound editions are well made by Oxford, and are Smyth-sewn, which is hard to find in these days of mass production and glue-bound (cheap) Bibles. Unfortunately, the black letter edition(words of Christ NOT in red) has been withdrawn, and the only available type is the red-letter, which, in this case, is in an annoying fire-engine red. Despite what some folks very erroneously state, the text of the New King James Version is translated from the exact same sources as the King James Bible of 1611. Not ONE verse is omitted, and in many, many places is a better translation than the old KJV. Archaic language is updated. The ONLY argument anyone can have with this Bible is that it is not the "old" King James. No other argument is valid.Keep in mind that as of now (mid 2006), all Oxford Bibles are made with thumb indexing, which most people hate, but that doesn't stop the wheels of big business. This is the best-made study Bible available in the NKJV.

First of all, let's get past several bones which seems to get stuck in many people's teeth: not everyone will agree with everything C. I. Scofield taught and, study bibles which include notes always exhibit biases reflecting a particular approach to scripture. But that's what all teachers in the Body of Christ provide and we are to make use of them as best we can regardless (Eph. 4:11). If you dislike C. I. Scofield's teaching or don't believe that a dispensational approach to interpreting scripture is sound, then you won't like this bible. But, if like me, you understand dispensationalism to be the result of sound biblical interpretation, then this "pocket edition" is an amazing bible study companion.

First, let me say that Oxford University press has produced a beautiful work of high quality--which really cannot be found anywhere else in this form factor or for this price. The genuine leather and sewn binding are first-rate. Due to its pocket size, this bible is thick for its width and height. Yet it lays open beautifully, nor due the pages stick together like so many new bibles. The paper itself is high quality, not skimpy and is whiter than most. In short, the pocket edition of this work is as high quality as most high-end bibles (ala Cambridge) costing 3-4 times as much. For a compact version, it is hard to imagine a nicer package.

Regarding the contents: this is the fully updated Scofield Study Bible with all the modern improvements and revisions (clarifications, charts, tables, and full set of study helps at the rear. The study aids include: the complete index to subject chain references (6 pages), a thorough subject index (37 pages), an index of proper names (29 pages), and a real concordance (61 pages). In regard to the concordance: it is the same concordance as the full-size Scofield (which is abbreviated from the concordance found in the revised MacArthur Study and Baptist Study editions of the NKJV). Still, a strong concordance compared with the embarrassments which are typically passed-off these days. This is a red-letter edition (words of Christ in red).

It also bears mentioning that Oxford has not succumbed to the postmodern mantra of our age so often found in modern study bibles: wasting precious print space for eye candy. (The Nelson NKJV Study bible being a prime example which comes to mind where visually appealing insets are so commonplace that useful information suffers at the hands of visual presentation.) Very little space is wasted. Indexes are real indexes--whoever did these indexes understands that an index is only as good as it connects the searcher's concept with the destination material. A refreshing change from the flimsy charts or tables which many study bibles have which purport to be indexed helps.

Older folks will need glasses to read this text: it is quite small--as one would expect--it's a pocket edition, right?! Still, it amazes me how well Oxford University Press has done 'shrinking down' the update Scofield Study Bible into this small package while retaining all the information while retaining quality.

In summary, if you are looking for a handy-size, high quality study bible which upholds the literal interpretation of Scripture and refuses to spiritualize away God's promises or find prophetic fulfillment in approximations, I highly recommend the genuine leather version of this work (ISBN 0-19-527568-3).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Adaptation, September 13, 2007
This review is from: The Scofieldï¿1/2 Study Bible III, NKJV (Imitation Leather)
This edition of Scofield's classic Study Bible stays true to its intentions, avoiding revision or modernization of Scofield's original notes (pre-1967), and carrying those notes into a more functional, practical, attractive format for the modern reader.

Still an excellent Classical Dispensationalist treatment of Scripture, which Christians -especially American Christians- should digest and understand, whatever their theological position may be.

4.0 out of 5 stars High Quality Bible!, March 23, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First let me state that the only reason I am not giving this bible 5 out of 5 stars is because Amazon has the words: BK and CDRom edition. There is no CDRom with this bible, at least not in the two bibles Amazon sent me with the ISBN 0195275276
I asked Amazon to check with Oxford University Press to see if they (Amazon) had the wrong description regarding the CDRom inclusion with this book. Instead Amazon sent me out a second, replacement bible that also had no CDRom. I dare not contact them again lest they send me a third replacement bible without the CDRom instead of correcting their description of this fine book.
So that over with. This is an incredibly fine bible of the highest quality. I would consider this a serious study bible. Scofield's references and the added notes are quite good. The NKJV is, in my opinion, the most accurate English translation bible next to the King James Version. The New King James Version uses the same Greek Received Text as the King James Version. Most other modern bibles use the Greek Critical Text which is missing verses found in the KJV. So right off the bat you know that you have an excellent and accurate bible translation with the NKJV.
The bible text type is quite readable. The notes are in smaller print as you would expect in a study bible.
I highly recommend this NKJV Scofield Study Bible. For price, being of the highest quality, and for a primary use bible--this one is excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars Scofield Study Bible, January 1, 2008

This review is from: The Scofieldï¿1/2 Study Bible III, NKJV (Imitation Leather)
This was my second Scofield Bible purchase...one in KJV for myself and the NKJV for my daughter. Great Sunday school bible with a subject based chain reference system which helps you to follow the theme of the Scriptures. At the bottom of the pages are study notes that are very informative of the text. Along with notes, maps, definitions, charts, concordance, and the chain references you have everything you need at your fingertips when studying the Bible. I would highly recommend this Bible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Bible, October 30, 2005
I am partial to the King James and New King James for their accuracy of the purer manuscripts. This New King James version goes well with the study notes. The maps are a huge help. There are maps that show the travels of the patriarchs, an explanation of dispensations, meanings of names, etc. I have really enjoyed this Bible but have given it only 4 stars because the pages are made of such thin paper that they feel quite fragile and I find myself turning them extra carefully so they don't crimp or tear. I hope Oxford will use slightly thicker paper in the future. I have a Cambridge Cameo KJV Bible and the pages are sturdy without being bulky, and I wish Oxford had made the Scofield pages like that. I give 2 stars to the quality of the paper used for the pages and 5 stars for the Scofield Study bible itself. The study notes and maps add richness to your bible study.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent study bible, September 13, 2007
The Scofield study bible III,NKJV is an excellent study bible. It is a good bible if you want to study prophecy.YOu can not understand revelation without going back to the major prophets in the OT and letting the scriptures explain themselves. The regular printing is very good but the notes at the bottom are a little small for a senior citizen like myself, but I use a magnifying glass for the notes and that works out fine. The bonded leather cover is really nice. I would reccomend this as being a number one.Bob California

For the avid scholar or the person who wants to dig a little deeper into God's Word, this is the Bible for you. It offers excellent references, definitions of names and terms as well as life application commentaries. It helps you to do your own study or just gain some more knowledge just by reading what is in it.
