Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Neuwirth, chief of spine services at New York's Hospital for Joint Diseases, shares a wealth of knowledge about the causes and treatment of scoliosis, a spinal deformity affecting adolescents and adults. He discusses comprehensively all aspects of treatment, surgical and nonsurgical, and includes a resource section listing treatment centers and support organizations. Although addressed to patients and their families, Neuwirth's dense text is somewhat difficult for the general reader to absorb; there is no use of sidebars, lists, or other information-formatting techniques to make the material more accessible and easier to read. True to the book's subtitle, one has a sense of sitting down with a highly skilled medical specialist, with all the difficulties in communication that usually occur between a layperson and a surgeon. Much of the information is duplicated in Nancy Schommer's less formidable Stopping Scoliosis (Avery, 1991) Some unique material is included though hard to find. Since both titles are recommended by the National Scoliosis Foundation and the offerings in this field are few at present, Neuwirth's book is recommended for larger and specialized collections. Index and illustrations not seen.

My daughter had scoliosis surgery in June, 1998. Answers to 98% of all questions I had were in this book. I am president of a local scoliosis chapter support group and this is the FIRST book I always recommend patients to read. Very easy reading.
