Book Description

December 15, 2006
This book is not for everyone.

Only a particular group of readers will enjoy this book. If you listen to National Public Radio, if you prefer NOVA to celebrity gossip shows, if your book shelves have all of your college text books (because you would not sell them back), and if you understand all of the jokes on "Big Bang Theory," then you are the right kind of person for "The Scoloderus Conspiracy." We know you will enjoy this novel. "Scoloderus" is for thinkers and even if you read it three times, it will still surprise you. Please appreciate that this is not a quick read about the majestic scenery of upstate New York, it is a tour-de-force of very bright and ruthless people scheming to destroy each other in a high stakes game of 'whom can you trust and for how long?'

Additional information on the book, including the first dozen pages and discussion questions for reading groups, is at scoloderusconspiracy.com.

The Opening Quote ~
Ambitious people understand intelligent people far better than intelligent people understand ambitious people; therefore, ambition will always triumph over intelligence. Once you appreciate this reality, civilization becomes clearer and unfortunately, more distressing.

SYNOPSIS
"The Scoloderus Conspiracy," is a thriller about very bright people committed to stopping each other. It is the tale of a family destroyed, a leader loosing his daughter, and a professor uncovering the greater conspiracy.

Three centuries after global cataclysms destroyed and reshaped the Earth, the United Americas Trade Federation (UATF) re-emerged. In their quest for a unified continent, this super-government seized land and absorbed the territorial governments of the former North America. The UATF rose to power using information found in ancient archives. These books were gifts from the previous civilization to help make survival possible. The archive information was vital to the UATF and they have worked to possess and control all of it.

The Libre Voyageurs have lived in the continent's northern territories for centuries. They survived by finding archives, collecting information, and selling it. The UATF outlawed that activity and declared all archive information is government property. The Voyageurs defy them and have been in a desperate war with the UATF for years; however, everything is about to change.

The Voyageurs have a bold plan. They have a high-level spy in their service and he is helping them to get the information to complete a weapon system that will defeat the UATF. The Voyageurs also have the daughter of one of the UATF's top military leaders working for them. They will sacrifice anyone to get what they need; no cost is too great.

When Colonel Anthony Hammond vanishes during a secret mission in the northern territories, and hours later his wife dies and his daughter disappears, the military becomes desperate; they have gambled everything and they are loosing control. Colonel Hammond is the son-in-law of the UATF's Chief Delegate and she is furious at the Voyageurs for their ruthless treatment of her family. The Chief Delegate recruits Professor Allen Taylor, to join the military team that is trying to find Hammond, foil the Voyageur's plans, and take brutal revenge.

Set against a powerful undercurrent of distrust and resentment between Professor Taylor and the Army's Chief of Staff, General Leland, "The Scoloderus Conspiracy" is a three-day journey of detecting plots within plots, seeking out truths within deceptions, and racing against time to avert disaster.

About the Author

D.A. Blankinship tells stories that immerse you in timeless places where you meet people who are familiar, yet, mysterious. Blankinship's formal education is in psychology and sociology. He enjoys experiences we call religious or metaphysical. He is amused that biologists think they know the origin of life while physicists are not sure anything exists. Blankinship believes we need to seek out the extraordinary within the ordinary and to do that, he recommends eating ice cream and chocolate chip cookies. Blankinship and his family live in Oswego, Kansas. Their home is on a densely wooded bluff above the Neosho River Valley; it is an excellent setting for writing, raising dogs, watching hummingbirds and owls, and contemplating how wonderful life is when the coffee tastes good.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interestingly frightening look into the future, October 31, 2008

This review is from: The Scoloderus Conspiracy (Paperback)
We screwed up the world. Three hundred years after that cataclysmic event, the world is being fought over again...In what was North America, the ruling force is The United Americas Trade Federation. In conflict with them are the Libre Voyageurs, guerrilla type warriors who want to overthrow the Federation.
Colonel Anthony Hammond, a major player in the conflicts, is missing. Apparently the Libre Voyaguers attacked the outfit Hammond was at. Casualties abound, but no Hammond.
A major operation by the Libre Voyageurs is in the works to uncover a major weapon, The (Spider) Scoloderus Project. Hammond is the key to getting the final pieces of the weapon to use it against the Federation.
The Federation taps a brilliant civilian professor Taylor to help find Hammond and uncover what is really going on.
The events to unravel the conspiracy and see what war and conflict breeds, is absolutely riviting. It is like Spy vs.Spy vs.Spy...you don't know who is in the right, who is telling the truth. Kind of like real war.
There are frightening references to the distant past, where characters marvel at things from the old (pre-Federation era) that show how the world has lost so much because of the never ending conflict...
D.A.(Dave) Blankinship writes crisply and delivers a book that only encompasses the span of three days, and shows what few actions can truly change the world.
I look forward to more from Mr. Blankinship.
Great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Scoloderus Conspiracy, August 24, 2008
This review is from: The Scoloderus Conspiracy (Paperback)
Even though this is not the type of book I typically read, I found this book difficult to lay down. I could not wait to get back to it and follow the characters described in the story. The plot just drew you in and held your attention from beginning to end. A sequel to this book would definitely be a must read for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Adventurous, and Provocative, August 20, 2008

This review is from: The Scoloderus Conspiracy (Paperback)
I have only one criticism of this book, the cover is boring and doesn't convey that this paperback is a real page turner. I was held on the proverbial edge-of-my-seat from the first pages to the very end.

On one level it is the story of rebels struggling to maintain independence in the face of strong unifying political and economic forces 300 years after natural calamities nearly destroyed the planet. The book is also about the mythical battle between good and evil, but best of all, at least for me, it is a story about the struggle for rationalism in action. The book explores whether we can understand before we act, learn about our situations by making careful observations, and think through alternatives with their respective consequences? Blankinship explores whether we can rely more on our brains than on our brawn.

Since I am primarily an intellectual, I love this kind of story. My favorite character was ex-professor Taylor, who has left academia because it has limited itself to restating a limited understanding of the knowledge of the past. Blankinship shows he is interested in not just any knowledge or understanding. Taylor is recruited by the Chief Delegate to help the armed forces figure out how and why several members of her family have either been killed or gone missing. Taylor reminds me of Sherlock Holmes, an investigator who notices what no one else notices, puts clues together in novel but logical ways, and helps solve numerous mysteries by his ability to think.

The plot takes a number of unexpected but rational turns such that I could never figure out ahead of time what might happen. I value this ability in a story teller. Several times I found myself thinking, "I never would have thought of that!" The book is fun, adventurous, and at the same time, provocative. It would make a fine screenplay.
