You wouldn't think anyone could come up with anything new for Scooby Doo, but amazingly, the movies released in the last few years have done just that, and been pretty good.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite classic Scooby, but pretty good nonetheless...
If I HAD to pick out one of the newer Scooby flicks to buy, I'd have to pick Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders. I really don't like the trend in the new Scooby movies in which the monsters are "real". (i.e. Witch's Ghost, Zombie Island, etc.) Part of what made Scooby-Doo kiddie fare (in my opinion) was the fact that the monsters, ghosts, werewolves, were never "real"...

You wouldn't think anyone could come up with anything new for Scooby Doo, but amazingly, the movies released in the last few years have done just that, and been pretty good.

Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders is brilliantly made to appeal to adults, in ways children won't catch. For instance, there's a very subtle visual indication at the beginning of the movie that Fred and Daphne are actually sleeping together, but it's so mild no kid could possibly realize it. Velma's closing line has a similar bit of business that will have adults laughing out loud, but no one under high-school age would even notice. There's a calculated cutaway from a scene where a character describes his supposed alien abduction, exactly when it is obvious (to an adult) he is discussing - er, a "delicate" personal probe.

Funniest of all, though, is Shaggy and Scooby simultaneously falling in love - with a cute '60s hippie chick, and her dog. Shaggy shaves his trademark scraz, combs his hair, and actually dresses up. He sings a wonderful love-fantasy song that expertly parodies Sonny and Cher's "I Got You, Babe," which will definitely have you laughing yourself off your chair if you've ever been a fan of either Scooby Doo characters or 1960's music. It's just very funny.

Following the lead of other recent Scooby movies, the gang find themselves up against not only the usual crooks in masks, but actual aliens as well, all in pretty clever style. And, just as former entries in this cartoon movie series have included vocals by recognized artists, Jennifer Love Hewitt gets into this one's act by singing the theme song. This one isn't quite as good as Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost, but it's well worth watching - especially for the adults, but kids will love it too.

If I HAD to pick out one of the newer Scooby flicks to buy, I'd have to pick Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders. I really don't like the trend in the new Scooby movies in which the monsters are "real". (i.e. Witch's Ghost, Zombie Island, etc.) Part of what made Scooby-Doo kiddie fare (in my opinion) was the fact that the monsters, ghosts, werewolves, were never "real" and could always be explained. This is MOSTLY the case in Invaders. This movie... well... I don't want to reveal the end because that would spoil the surprise... but it's a good combination of the new and the old.

Ahem.

As a stand-alone cartoon, I probably would have rated it 4 stars. As a Scooby cartoon, I had to drop it down to 3. (Well, maybe 3 and a half...) Unnecessary changes to the Mystery Machine and the gang's wardrobe made it a bit distracting. And I'm probably being too picky on the next bit, but surely they could have found some people to do a little better version of the classic Scooby characters voices - at least in the case of Scooby and Shaggy. (Where's Matthew Lillard when you need him?)

If you think you can get past slightly different voices (well, actually, Fred's the same), a few wardrobe changes, and a mini-vanned version of the Mystery Machine, you may enjoy this movie immensely. It has just enough classic Scooby to be appealing, has a pretty cool "beefed-up" version of the original Scooby theme, good development of the actual mystery, and a genuinely surprising twist at the end.

Really cute movie full of interesting characters including flying saucer buffs, secretive scientists, and less than friendly aliens. I was really pleased with this movie, and so glad I bought it! So far I have been happy with all of his recent movies, Zombie Island, Witches Ghost and this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome invasion!, October 17, 2000

I have to place this movie second to Zombie Island. Though not as good as that one, it was definitely better than Witch's Ghost. I loved the entire plot. It mixed some old school Scooby Doo (bad guys in masks) with some new (real monsters and romance). Speaking of, I think the romance between Shaggy and Crystal and between Scooby and Amber worked just fine despite what others have said in their reviews. I loved Shaggy's love song as well. It was corny, but cute. I'm 25 and I've been a big Scooby Doo fan since I was younger. I own all three Scooby Doo of the movies and hope there will be more to come.

I have loved Scooby Doo for years and now my 4 year old does also! We watched Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders last night and loved every minute of it! It is fast moving and incorporates some of the old "men in mask" ideas from the original shows (it was always a man in a mask) with a modern touch and a very surprise ending. Great for kids -- great for adults -- a job well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good fun - not too scary for an 8 year old, November 1, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Scooby Doo: Alien Invaders (Std) (DVD)
I liked the movie and so did my 8 year old daughter. It was clever, funny, and kept even my interest all the way through. And my daughter never said "yuck" once during Shaggy's love fantasy, and that's a first! One of the things I most appreciated about the movie was that the scary scenes were interspersed with quieter periods that easily held my daughter's interest - it was nice to see a kid's film that wasn't one frenetic chase or blow-'em-up scene after another. Art well done and nice music, too. We recommend it!

What a treat! This is just what's needed for those of us tired of dull unimaginative animation movies. Well written and entertaining,it is clever, engaging and amusing without disrespecting the intelligence of the viewer-adult or child. A little mystery, a little adventure and some good laughs--the perfect Scooby Snack. (Star Wars fans can listen for the treat of Mark Hamil-Luke Skywalker himself.) And, hey, NO SCRAPPY! Thank goodness. I can honestly say that this is my FAVORITE SCOOBY EVER! If you can't like this Scooby, you can't like any Scooby. The writers, Davis Doi and Lance Falk, take beloved characters and make them even MORE charming. These guys have a great future--I hope to see more of them and more work like this. Rent it and see if any Scooby can compare. Want to see how to keep an old classic fresh and fun? Here's the blueprint. Jolly good, lads! Jolly good!

4.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ADDITION, January 21, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Scooby Doo: Alien Invaders (Std) (DVD)
The mystery may be a little weaker than in previous Scooby movies but this is still well worth your time and showcases the huge potential in the revamped Scooby franchise.

The Mystery Inc. gang break down in the desert (déjà vu?) and have to stay the night in a nearby town where the locals rant about aliens kidnapping cattle. So obviously they are up for investigation.

I still don't like those stupid sound effects that are STILL (!!!!!!) used when Scooby or Shaggy BEGIN to run away. You know what I'm talking about. It sounds like someone rattling a quarter around in a tin can. It's pretty lame, considering all the thought and effort that has went into updating the franchise, that these old-fashioned and cruddy sound effects are being used in this day and age.

But that aside there is a lot of fun to be had as Shaggy falls in love (his song is way cool), is kidnapped by the aliens along with Scooby and the gang suspecting a rather unfriendly mechanic.

Scooby Doo is going places (even further if they do away with those sound effects) and next time the writers should focus more on plot and mystery as this one was wrapped up in a disappointingly short 74 minutes. But Scooby still rocks despite this being the weakest so far.

The DVD is in Dolby Surround and fullscreen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Scooby's Best Work, November 17, 2000
This is not one of Scooby's better movies. Some of the images are fine, and there are some comical moments. The crime itself makes sense, and the actions of the criminals are interesting. But those are the only real good things I can say about this. Unlike "Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost," or "Scooby Doo On Zombie Island," the plot is quite thin. The misleads are not well placed; the actual criminals are a bit too obvious; and the presence of the real alien in my opinion does not really fit. Young children may like this, but unlike "Scooby Doo and the Witch's ghost," or "Scooby Doo On Zombie Island," this will probably have a young cut off age.
