5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Game for Scooby Fans!, September 27, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Scooby Doo! First Frights (Video Game)
An outstanding game for your Scooby fan. My kids are huge fans of Scooby Doo and we've played every video game we could find on PS2, PSP, DS, and PC. First Frights is one of the best!

It has 4 Episodes/Mysteries. The graphics are just fine-nothing too outstanding but very good for the PS2 (crisp, clear, with good color). The controls are superb without any glitches or freezes and the voice acting does the job. My son is on his second playthrough. The game is not very difficult but he did have to battle some of the bosses more than once. It took him about 12 hours to get through the entire game. This is the perfect length for a 9 year old.

In comparison with some of the other SD games for the PS2 this is probably the easiest we've encountered. It is not like the Dora the Explorer or Diego games (those are ultra easy) and it has some challenge but it is nothing like some of the other SD games that are actually quite difficult in places. My kids also liked the PS2 version of Mystery Mayhem. They were less fond of the other Scooby games for the PS1 and PS2.

If you have a young Scooby fan (I would recommend the ideal ages to be about 7-12) I cannot recommend this title highly enough. I would consider it a must buy and a really great value for your money.

My son loves Scooby Doo so I got him this game. He really liked it a lot. He finished the game pretty quickly however (much more quickly than most other games). I asked him how he liked it, and he said it was great. He said that he wants to play it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Scooby Doo Game, November 15, 2009
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Scooby Doo! First Frights (Video Game)
I rented this game for my 7 year old son. It did not take him long to figure out the controls. The game has 4 Episode Games with 4 Levels within each Episode Game. The Gang has to collect scooby snacks, clues, break things to find more scooby snacks and clues, fight ghosts, witches and villains and at the end solve the mystery. The graphics are nice. The game is fun to play, but might lack the challenge some more complicated games offer. My son played through 3 Episode Games in one evening and finished the next day. He liked the game so much he started over again. I think we will put this game on Santa's list.

My seven year old nephews liked the game. They were excited that it was a Scooby Doo game. They found this game to be too easy though. Please note that they do not usually spend unlimited hours playing the games. They both said that they were done with it after one weekend. If your seven year old wants a bit of a challenge this might not be the game. Another note,.. good clean fun. Uncle Bruce.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Gaming Experience For All Ages, November 15, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Scooby Doo! First Frights (Video Game)
If you're new the whole Scooby Doo! scene for the Playstation 2 console, the fact of the matter is First Frights is a magnificent jumping off point to get involved in the beloved franchise regardless of your age or video game level of experience.

Though considered in its waning years of development thanks to the Playstation 3, the PS2 is far from extinct thanks to releases like this very title that came only to the Wii and Playstation 2 home consoles. Not only is the system still being supported, but evidently still offers some exclusivity even over the current generation offerings!

That said First Frights technically represents the 4th Scooby Doo! Incarnation to show up on the PS2 hardware (first being Scooby Doo: Night of 100 Frights followed by Scooby Doo: Mystery Mayhem and then finally Scooby Doo: Unmasked). However, unlike the first three, which were distributed by THQ, First Frights is the first forego material based on the classic 2D Hanna-Barbara cartoon in favor of a fully 3D CG rendered animation (ala Pixar). Additionally it is the first of a pair of Scooby games (the second being Scooby Doo and the Spooky Swamp) distributed directly by Warner Brothers Games.

In Scooby-Doo! First Frights players witness the roots of Mystery Inc. as the gang unites for the first time to solve some of its early mysteries. Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma are all playable characters in the game used to explore environments, solve puzzles, dispatch enemies and collect clues to unmask devious villains and gain prestige as world famous detectives.

The game spans four mysteries across 22 levels of game play and players can expect to explore such locales as a Phantom Cruise Ship, Haunted High School, Foreboding Castle and so on. The environments look solid even on the over-decade old hardware with themes and tones that would fit right in with the classic series just fully realized in 3D detail.

The in-game music is perfectly fitting, harkening back to the classic cartoon and live-action movie offerings of the franchise and the vocal work/ cut scenes are perfectly top notch as well.

Now onto the most important element- the game play itself. First Frights is pretty spectacular on all fronts. Much like any of the Lego games, a steady camera with a ¾ above angle makes for very user-friendly platforming without any of the dizziness and disorientation commonly associated with 3D gaming. Of course the downside to this style of viewpoint is that it can be difficult to judge depth when attempting to jump. The good news is that unlike the jumping in the Lego games, failing to land a jump has absolutely no consequence here in terms of health, number of lives and so on. Your character simply respawns indefinitely.

The primary quest is one of exploration and collecting with some nice intuitive combat with ghosts, ghouls and skeletons thrown in for good measure. In fact at the risk of sounding redundant, it is perhaps most accurate to compare this game's play dynamics to any of the Lego platformers. Beginning with the two-player co-op option with easy drop-in, dropout functionality anywhere in the game and the fact that various playable characters offer unique strengths, abilities, weapons, and access to certain areas. The controller arrangement/ game control is identical and almost everything in the game can be smashed, bashed and clobbered, releasing loads of Scooby Snacks to collect (rather than studs).

Also borrowing from the Lego formula for success, the true challenge of the game for more advanced players stems from the fact that true completion of the game requires revisiting the various levels in free-play mode so as to collect all of the hidden goodies using unlocked characters in your quiver.

Unlike the Lego games, rather than offering a massive roster of unlockable characters, First Frights offers costumes to be unlocked for the various members of Mystery Inc. that grant different abilities and skill sets for Freeplay mode once Storymode is completed.

In all, I had pretty high expectations for this title going in as an adult gamer looking for something to play with younger kids in the family at get-togethers and came away impressed on every conceivable level. Truly this is that rare game that actually manages to capitalize on a beloved license and deliver on the potential of the source material. Truly gamers of just about every conceivable skill level/ age will find something to enjoy here and for me personally, this is the first true alternative to the Lego platforming games I adore.

My son's new favorite game... it took about a week for him to past the game (with very little help from daddy), but loves to replay the levels (you can pick levels to replay after it's been played thru). He picked up the game super quick, his first time playing the game he had no problem playing it (didn't even look at the game book at all).... If your young kid like video games, they will love this one...

I bought this game for my 8 year old daughter and she has been playing it since. After you go through it and beat it, you can go back through whichever scene and keep playing. Switching between all the different characters is alot of fun, and being able to play simultaneously is a definite bonus. Absolutely recommend this game for kids 6 to 10. If you like this one, you'll love Shrek 2 as well.

I have two children ages 3 and 6. I can say without a doubt this is one of their favorite games to play. They are easily entertained for hours trying to get through the levels. I loved the fact there was limited reading which allowed them to figure out sections without me having to stop whatever I was doing to read the directions to them. There aren't too many games out there that are actually age appropriate for small children. Both my boys are huge Scooby Doo fans so I was really happy to see how much enjoyment they got from this. Also they were actually able to play the game til the very end without getting bored. Might not be a good buy for an older kid but for the younger crowd a real pleaser.

It is the style of game I really enjoy with collecting items to complete it at 100%. Not to complicated and it is not so scary that a little kid would freak.
