5.0 out of 5 stars great early reader book - love the 'picture clues', December 10, 2008
This review is from: Scooby-doo The Secret Santa Mystery (Scooby-Doo, Reader #15) (Paperback)
It's the week before Christmas, and the Mystery Inc gang is up at the north pole helpling Santa to get ready for the big day. They baked a big batch of christmas cookies and left them by the window to cool. Sure enough, when they check on the cookies, the cookies are gone. Who could have taken them? Could it have been the creepy snow beast? The search is on. Can Scooby and Shaggy and the gang find the cookies before Christmas?

The layout of the book has text on one side of the page and a full page illustration on the other.

The text of the story is peppered with picture clues (pictures that replace some of the words). So where it says "Shaggy and Scooby were hungry", the words 'Shaggy' and 'Scooby' are replaced by a picture of the characters.

What I've found when reading this story with my 4 year old, is that having the pictures interwoven with the text is helping him to notice that there are words on the page instead of just focusing on the illustrations. This helps him to follow along with the text as we read the words. Also the text contains easy words for kids to sound out.

This is listed as an early reader level 1. Sometimes it is difficult to find level 1 stories that are not hopelessly boring. The days of "see spot run" are gone. These books are a fantastic way to keep kids engaged and still keep the text easy enough for even the earliest of readers. I would definitely recommend this story for preschool aged children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Son loves scooby doo, January 5, 2008
This review is from: Scooby-doo The Secret Santa Mystery (Scooby-Doo, Reader #15) (Paperback)
Good for new readers who love Scooby. Kind of dopey plot though (of course tv show always ends "too neatly" for anyone who's not a kid- part of scooby's campy appeal).
