Since I got this book for next to nothing, I'm going to be generous and give it three stars. First, I have to agree with the other reviewer who said that this book is full of instructions for treats that most everyone already knows how to make: floats, cones, sundaes, parfaits, ice pops. You'll be 71 pages into the thing before the recipes for the ice cream tarts, bombes,...

I didn't think I would be interested in a book on store-bought ice cream desserts but with the encouragement of my ice-cream-loving child I agreed to have a look. The second recipe in the book, gelato affogato (ice cream with espresso and Cognac) showed this was going to be much more sophisticated and delightful than what I thought. There are root-beer floats and chocolate milkshakes (hers is quadruple-chocolate!) but also scroppino (Champagne, lemon sorbet, and vodka) and sorbet terrine with raspberry sauce. Best are her sauces. They're ingenious, smart, delightful, and I've tried only a few. I recommend roasted strawberries and mangos with lime. Clementines with cardamom and cherry compote with balsamic vinegar will be next.

I loved Lori's lemon dessert book, but this one delights me just as much. My family thinks she's the best, and I agree.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ICE CREAM DOCTOR HAS ARRIVED!, April 24, 2003

Wowee! I love this delicious looking book. Lori Longbotham (author of Luscious Lemon Desserts) proves she is the queen of all desserts. There are so many wonderful sounding sweets in this great book (150 in all) it's hard to know where to begin-- but I'd start with the Sky-High Layered Ice Cream Cake, chockful of chocolate and hazelnut gelato, nutello--it's so simple yet so sinful (top it with marshmallow sauce, yummo!) Lots and lots of cool iceas so that are so easy even kids could make them (like the Snowballs, ice cream rolled in toasted coconut and drenched in hot chocolate sauce), miniature ice cream bombes and cookie sandwiches, sorbet pops...It made me want to quit my day job and open my own ice cream parlor. Really gorgeous photo and cool looking design--makes a great gift, especially for your friends with their own ice cream makers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scoop to the rescue, April 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Scoop: How to Change Store-Bought Ice Cream into Fabulous Desserts (Paperback)
The perfect dessert book for cooks like me who put all their energy and creativity into the main course, and then remember, oh, no, what can I serve for dessert??? It includes quick, easy dessert sauces (including variations on the beloved chocolate theme at all levels of seriousness), perfect ways to rustle up last minute dessert combinations from something that just might already be in the fridge or on the shelves(Roasted Strawberries, for example). I've already reached for the Scoop when guests were arriving in half an hour and dessert was still eluding me...but there was a carton of ice cream in the freezer...and it saved me.

This book is terrific! You'll never be at a loss for a dessert idea again. The flavor combinations are fantastic, incredibly creative and ideal for both adults and children. I made a Meringue Ice Cream Cake with the Smooth Strawberry Sauce for my daughter's 5th birthday. It was wonderful, the perfect amount of sweetness, and easy to make. The kids (and the parents) scarfed every crumb.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book, April 14, 2003

This review is from: The Scoop: How to Change Store-Bought Ice Cream into Fabulous Desserts (Paperback)
It's about time somebody came out with a decent ice cream dessert book that cuts out the hassle of making the ice cream from scratch. For me, there are too many wonderful ice cream products and flavors available to waste the time and the mess doing it myself. I particularly like the ideas for molded layered desserts, and the sauces to go with them. Already wowed the crowd at a dinner party last week!
Highly recommend this book.

You'll be 71 pages into the thing before the recipes for the ice cream tarts, bombes, etc. make an appearance. The thing that bothers me the most is, there are NO PHOTOGRAPHS in the book, not one! Enjoy the front and back covers, because those are the only photos you get. That is, imo, an absolute crime in a dessert book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids will love this book, April 21, 2003

My 12 year old son was given this book as a present. He loved looking at all the recipes and made me a spectacular ice-cream soda using the recipe from this book. It cleared up for me the difference between an ice-cream soda/float and all the options for the best use of store bought ice-cream. I highly recommend the book as a present for pre-teens and also for adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars Playing with your ice cream!, April 21, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Scoop: How to Change Store-Bought Ice Cream into Fabulous Desserts (Paperback)
This author feels the same way I do about ice cream! I am so thrilled with the Scoop. I got it as a gift and it's all about playing with your ice cream! Taking store bought ice cream and making all kinds of stuff out of it. Fancy cakes, pies, and tarts like Sky-High Ice Cream Cake, cones, pops, sandwiches, old-fashioned soda fountain treats like a Strawberry Blonde Float, and mixing and matching with tons of sauces. I think there are 30 recipes for sauces and at least 10 for flavoring whipped cream. Everything is really easy. This book is definitely by an ice cream lover. I can tell she loves everything about ice cream--like I do.

This is a great book for men who want to prepare a romantic dinner for their women. I'm great with the appetizers and main course but have always depended on a gallon of ice-cream for dessert. I'm a man who has little interest in baking. Dressing-up ice-cream is really the way to go... because it's easy but it shows you care. Thank you Lori!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasty and EASY!, April 18, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Scoop: How to Change Store-Bought Ice Cream into Fabulous Desserts (Paperback)
When you don't have time for a big production, this book will help you make something that looks like one. I made a cookie crumb ice cream cake the day before my dinner party in between shopping, cleaning and other chores. It seemed to take almost no extra time and it was beautiful as well as delicious. My two teenage sons were also very proud of their hot fudge sundae tart, but unfortunately, they ate almost all of it themselves.
