Ive read at least 10 books (urge to kill group) and they were excellent with fully developed characters who grew along with the story. This group of books ramble on just to fill up ppages with words. Lutz came up with the storyline but didnt write this one and some others or these were written when he was a novice. BORING!!!!"

SCORCHER, the second in the Fred Carver series, is a dynamite thriller, replete with unexpected plot twists and excellently visualized characters.

Someone is killing people with a flamethrower, fashioned from a scuba diving tank. One of the victims is Fred's five year old son, Chipper. This horrible act leads Carver on a vengeance crusade. All evidence points to the schizophrenic son of a wealthy hot dog restaurant magnate. Carver insinuates his way into the investigation, and finds the Kave family has a lot of secrets. Carver's relentless pursuit for the truth--and vengeance---is detailed in great action and expository segments. A totally engaging and enjoyable novel. Look forward to reading more Carver stories.

i hope I don't, anyway someone builds a homemade flame thrower, and goes on a rampage with it, but kills a witness to his crime, a innocent 5 year old kid, which is the son of an ex cop turned pi, turned vigilante, who did it, will fred carver get his revenge? you will just have to read, but I warn you, the ending is plausible, but not what you expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lutz gets HOT again, July 3, 2000
This review is from: Scorcher (Audio Cassette)
John Lutz, who is known for well developed characters and his 'sit on the edge of your seat' suspense, has done it again. He tells the story of a serial killer who wields a homemade flame thrower fashioned from a scuba tank.

This crazed killer made the mistake of killing the son of Florida private detective Fred Carver. All of the clues point to the brilliant schizophrenic son of one Florida's wealthiest families, and when the suspect goes on the run, Carver sets out to bring him to justice dead or alive. Scorcher is an explosive, thoroughly unforgettable mystery that will leave you wanting more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Detective Mystery, December 5, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Wow! John Lutz picks up the pace in this second story in the Fred Carver Series. I liked the first story Tropical Heat: A Fred Carver Mystery (Book One), but really thought this to be a better, more complex mystery.

A key element to any great story is interesting characters and Lutz's Fred Carver is a great example. Building on the first story, Lutz takes the time to build a realistic and complex personality. If you like detective series, you'll want to follow this one.
