Book Description

5 and upK and up
The sloths at Sleepy Valley Sloth School were content in their slothfulness. Once in a while the teacher would awake and command them all to yawn or snore, but most of the time, the class just slept. One day, a new sloth arrives. She isn’t much like a sloth at all. She is a go-getter, a mover and a shaker—which is to say she actually moves. By mid-morning she’s driven the other sloths crazy. They think she’s a pest, and she thinks they’re nothing but a bunch of bores, that is until a real boar arrives—an official representative of S.O.S. (Society for Organizing Sameness) sent to close the school because of their low academic scores. Something has to be done, and all eyes turn to Sparky. Even with all of her energy though, Sparky can’t save the school alone.
Readers are sure to enjoy this humorous tale that celebrates the value of both individuality and being true to oneself.

Amazon.com Review

Whoever thought a bunch of slumbering sloths could do so well on a standardized test? But that's what happens--with a healthy dose of hoodwinking--in this tongue-in-cheek schoolroom story from comic duo Helen Lester (on words) and Lynn Munsinger (on sloths).

Everything's quietly copacetic at Sleepy Valley Sloth School: "Once in a while the teacher would remember his job and wake up with a lesson. 'All right, now,' he would drawl, 'everybody yawn.' Or 'Keep those snores coming.' Or 'All together, students, let's roll over.'" But one day an energetic young sloth (they do, apparently, exist) starts mixing things up, much to the annoyance of her classmates. But her "vim and vigor and vitality" seem to have shown up not a minute too soon, because she's got to find a way for Sleepy Valley to pass the ratings board test of the Society for Organizing Sameness (the S.O.S., represented in this case by a wild boar in a bow tie).

Lester's story is often fun and funny, but the best parts of this book come from Munsinger's whimsically worn-out sloths--slumped under desks, draped over swing sets, even stacked up (snoozing) in between building blocks. Score one for the sloths, indeed. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

From Publishers Weekly

These propitiously paired collaborators (Hooway for Wodney Wat; Tacky the Penguin) again turn out a comic caper with a subtly delivered moral. Words and pictures set the scene with laugh-out-loud humor as readers meet the pajama-clad, somnambulistic students at Sleepy Valley Sloth School, which is perched on the branches of a tree. "Once in a while the teacher would remember his job and wake up with a lesson" in such demanding subjects as yawning, snoring and rolling over but most of the time "the class just slept." Instead of lunch hour there are "lunch three hours," followed by naptime, study hall (when the sloths fall asleep in a hammock or on the floor, their books covering their faces) and recess (which finds the classmates draped over a swing set, dozing). The dismissal bell rings at 3:00, yet it takes them until dusk to exit (the custodian finally sweeps them out with a broom). Enter Sparky, whose energy and spunk her new classmates find anything but contagious. However, when an inspector comes from the S.O.S. (Society for Organizing Sameness) in the Mammal District and threatens to close down the school, the sloths follow Sparky's cues to successfully perform the required tasks in such a way that they save their school without betraying their true nature. Score another one for Lester and Munsinger. Readers will hope the sloths return for a rematch. Ages 4-8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hanging Around With Sloths....., August 28, 2001
This review is from: Score One for the Sloths (Hardcover)
"Ho-dee-hum. It was another day at Sleepy Valley Sloth School, and all the sloths were just hanging around." Every so often their teacher would awaken and teach a short lesson in yawn, snore or roll over. Lunch hour took three hours as the sloths slowly ate each berry, one at a time and after such an exhausting workout in the cafeteria, it was time for a nap. Then onto study hall and finally recess, though no sloth had the energy to play. They just hung around all over the swing set sleeping some more. At dismissal, no one had the energy to get up and leave, so they all just dozed and waited for the janitor to sweep them out the door. Life was good and slothful until Sparky showed up. She was perky and full of energy, a real mover and shaker and by lunchtime had driven the rest of the class crazy, disrupting their usual sleepy routine. But when a Boar with a clipboard from the Society for Organizing Sameness (SOS) in the Mammal District shows up and announces that Sleepy Valley Sloth School will be closed, because of such low, really non-existant test scores, Sparky comes to the rescue and saves the day..... That dynamic duo of Helen Lester and Lynn Munsinger have teamed up again and authored a delightful and amusing story that will have kids giggling and laughing and definitely wanting more. Ms Lester's charming, witty text includes puns and wordplay and is only outdone by Ms Munsinger's humorous and expressive artwork featuring sleepy, napping, inert sloths draped over trees, tables and playground equipment often with schoolbooks covering their faces. Perfect for youngsters 4-8, Score One For The Sloths is hopefully the beginning of a new series and makes a wonderful addition to all home libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is cute!, September 8, 2001

A friend of mine at work pointed this out to me, and I was struck immediately at how funny the story and the illustrations work out together. Who would have known that looking at very inactive sloths could be so entertaining? For instance, the scene at the playground is precious.

As if the illustrations weren't enough, the story is good, and Sparky, the character introduced as a contrast to the other sloths and a disruption to their routine, was able to "save the day" without any of the characters having to completely change their personality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cute!, May 28, 2002

This review is from: Score One for the Sloths (Hardcover)
Score One for the Sloths, written by Helen Lester and illustrated by Lynn Musinger, is a wonderful story that truly defines the nature of the animals in a way a child can understand and enjoy. The story is about Sleepy Valley Sloth School, a school where sloths do nothing all day except sleep and eat. About halfway through the book, Sparky, the perky sloth, comes to the school. The lazy sloths do not welcome her arrival until they find out that because of their poor academic performance, their school might be shut down.
The entertaining story features wonderful illustrations. The book has relatively easy language, and it is probably aimed at an early elementary school level. Helen Lester does a great job of portraying the typical sloth as well as the atypical sloth. The story conveys a message to children readers about stereotypes: although sloths have a reputation for being lazy, some do not fit that image. The illustrations work wonderfully with the text to tell a story about one sloth that saved the day for the rest.

Lester, Helen. Score One For the Sloths. Illus. Lynn Munsinger.
