Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6 A library bookmobile is not normally a vehicle of terror (unless I happen to be driving it). So Tapp's notion of using a bookmobile to transport two ghosts is a commendably novel one, although ``terror'' is much too strong a word to describe this amiable little story. The ghosts are the bookmobile librarian, Aunt Vira, and her feisty niece, C.C., who may be the most garrulous ghost in recent literature. The Black Hole Gang is made up of four siblings: narrator Ryan, Josh, bookloving Carrie, and baby Brooke, the most annoying child since Shirley Temple. The story, such as it is, involves the gang's occasionally reluctant attempts to liberate the two ghosts from a haunt pattern tying them to the material world. That there is never a doubt of their ultimate success robs the plot of dramatic tension, but undemanding readers will enjoy the good humored attempts along the way. The more critical, however, may find the last paragraph's pointed promise of a sequel the most terrifying thing in the book. Michael Cart, Beverly Hills Public Lib.
