Book Description

Set in New York and Paris amid the glamorous and competitive worlds of art and real estate, Scorpio Rising takes the reader from the late 1940s to the 1960s through the tumultuous lives of its heroes.

There is Alex Ivanov, the son of a Russian immigrant and part-time prostitute. He yearns to escape his sordid life and achieve fame and fortune. His dreams of becoming a world-class builder are met with countless obstacles, yet he perseveres in the hope of someday receiving the recognition he craves.

Half a world away, Brigitte Dartois is an abused teenager who runs into the arms of a benefactor with an agenda all his own. When she finds out that her boss has an ulterior motive, she flees again, determined to earn her living through her art. This career brings her fame, but also the unwanted attention of her early abuser.

Monique Domovitch’s debut novel, Scorpio Rising, is a compelling tale filled with finely etched characters and a superb understanding of the power of ambition. Scorpio Rising promises to resonate with all who once had a dream.

Reviewed by Anne B. for Readers Favorite
I found this book quite enticing and very difficult to put down. In fact I read it in one morning. The lead characters Brigitte and Alex are quite captivating and work well together. Domovitch is a master of characterization, even developing the cast of secondary characters. This would make a great movie. This plot has it all drama dealing with life in general, greed, and deception. This book plays on the readers emotions, with an ending that leaves the reader ready to jump into the sequel. If you enjoy a good drama, this is the book for you.

Even as a young man during the early 1950's, Alex Ivanov's is determined to leave his life of poverty and become rich. He soon finds, however, that in order to achieve his dreams he must make some sacrifices. Thousands of miles away, in Paris, beautiful Brigitte Dartois escapes from her abusive childhood and struggles to make it on her own. But when fame comes knocking, it also brings dangers from the past.
Some people have ambitions so great that they will trample on anything and anyone to achieve it. Born in Brooklyn from an embittered mother, Alexander Ivanov climbs his way to a better life in New York. Thousands of miles away, beautiful Brigitte Dartois also has big dreams and raging ambitions. Scorpio Rising is an American saga, the story of two people whose single-minded obsessions are put to the test when they meet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Five Star Review Worthy of a 10
Ms.Domovitch is a master of character development, as is evidenced by the expertly crafted lives of Brigette Dartois and Alexander Ivanov. I especially enjoyed the teaser Ms. Domovitch offers us at the close of the book, pushing me to immediately turn to the sequel The Sting of the Scorpio.

I loved the building up of the characters Alex and Brigitte. The whole of the story is giving the reader a detailed look at who the characters are and what drives them to do what they do. I loved knowing the characters so well. The story built to such a point that it was inevitable that the two main characters, Alex and Brigitte would meet and come together. Alex and Brigitte each had a drive to be more than what life was handing them. On separate life journeys they moved forward against all odds to finally come to the same point. Great story. Loved every minute of it. --Goodreads

The author has a wonderful way of weaving a story - particularly in the way she meticulously paints little details that give such colour and presence to the characters that they truly come alive. --Kindle review

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Read November 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is one I could not put down, Alex Ivanov at age 12, already knows he wants to get out of Brooklyn by any means it takes, and end up in Manhatten. It will take hard work, greed and deception and several years to obtain that.
Brigitte Dartois is a 16 yr old in Paris, sexually abused by her step-father, and is ordered out of the house by her mother. On her own, she works hard and becomes a famous artist. It is not an easy road for her at all.
These two young people meet when Alex goes to Paris for an Architectual contest, and so it goes.
I was given this book for a review. I LOVED the book, and will look forward to reading the sequel to it. The book reminded me of the book Cain & Abel by Jeffrey Archer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chic lit and the troubled path of romance March 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is chic lit with romance and a thousand obstacles to overcome on the way. On the way to what you ask? Well the two main characters, who both carry the burden of a childhood of trauma, need to find the path to each other of course. Readers who enjoy the trials and tribulations of a couple destined to meet and be together will find enough in this book to last quite a while. It reminded me of the dramatic TV series they used to make in the 80s like Flamingo Road, Dynasty or Dallas. Plenty of drama and heartache. I received a free copy of this book for my review

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing February 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
From the outset these two damage children grab your attention and demand their stories be heard. Opposites in the way their abuse has affected them, you are aware from very early on they are destined to meet, but the intricate web that is woven around them as they draw closer leaves you spellbound. For me the mark of a good book it that you are content to follow the journey without feeling the urge to skip ahead to see what happens and I can honestly say I read this start to finish without once feeling the need. At times the two main characters are hard to feel sympathy for despite knowing their backgrounds, Alex at times can seem arrogant and Brigitte's naivety frustrating, yet it is a true reflection of the survival mechanisms used by many abuse victims. In spite of their faults you find yourself hoping they can find a way to help each other heal while at the same time wondering if these two complex characters can ever put their pasts behind them to allow themselves happiness. The two different locations of Paris and New York are perfectly suited to the character that inhabits it and reflects the question of whether destiny is being kind in bringing them together or whether their differences will be too great for them to ever be truly happy. I can honestly say I was left wanting more and was hugely relieved to see there was a sequel. I would recommend this book whole heartedly.
