Editorial Reviews

Hooks: a musical idea or short riff, passage, or phrase that catches the ear of the listener. Some bands have 'em, most don't. Austin-based five-piece Scorpion Child have 'em in spades. Whether it's an extended blues jam or a short slice of bombastic heavy rock The Child lay a hook so tasty everyone bites. Scorpion Child come from lots of different places, not only logistically but musically. Their sound heralds back to early 70's kraut and psych-rock with a modern twist and lists Pentagram, Hairy Chapter and Lucifer's Friend as influences. They originally formed in 2006 and have spent the last few years perfecting both their songwriting and stage presence. Aryn Jonathan Black fronts the outfit with a siren-like voice reminiscent of a young Robert Plant.

The folks at Nuclear Blast have been on a roll lately, signing retro rock bands left and right, from Kadavar to Graveyard to Orchid. The latest addition to their roster is Austin-based Scorpion Child, who delivered their self-titled debut album earlier this year. Think of it as the quirky Southwest answer to the heavier Swedish stoner rock scene.

While most of these retro bands stick pretty close to Black Sabbath worship, Scorpion Child has a more unique sound. Led Zeppelin is the obvious influence, and there’s a bit of Wolfmother and even the Darkness in their sound, but it’s German band Kingdom Come (once written off as Zeppelin clones themselves) that this album really brings to mind. That’s probably not an intentional similarity by the band, but once you hear it it’s hard not to compare the two. The vocals definitely have a Lenny Wolf (and at times Shannon Hoon) vibe. This is really fun stuff. It’s nothing complicated, but there are tons of great riffs, bluesy rhythms and some serious vocal acrobatics.

There are some really dynamite songs on the Scorpion Child debut. The single “Polygon of Eyes” is an obvious choice, and “King’s Highway” and “Liquor” are just as killer. The bonus track “Keep Goin’” is another winner, and is about as good as anything on the “proper” album.

File this one alongside the latest releases from Rival Sons, the Winery Dogs and the Answer as proof positive that old school heavy rock is still being made and still a hell of a lot of fun to rock out to. If you’re a fan of any of those bands (or the Darkness, Orchid, Kadavar, Graveyard and the like), be sure to check out what Scorpion Child has to offer. It’s also highly recommended if you’re a Kingdom Come fan.

One of the best new bands I have come across in awhile.
Zep sounding without the drawn out soloing and with a more metal edge.

They sound almost to a T like a great band out of the 80's called Fastway . Even the singer sounds almost exactly the same .
Fastway was more melodic and had more breaks in the songs like Zep though .

I'll keep this short... but don't mistake my laziness for lack of enthusiasm. Great debut....very "classic rock"ish. They killed it on the stage...it was the first time I bought a shirt at a concert for a band I had never heard of previously. These songs will get stuck in your head...check it out!!!

A child is born... a Scorpion Child that is. I'm hooked and in for the long haul with these guys. Fantastic vocals from Aryn that are a throwback to the very best days of rock music (past, present and future). And I have to say, Shaun's bass is groovy and full of soul, and is so nice to hear prominently. So much bass work is lost and drown out in so many bands but definitely not here. Chris and Tom's guitar work is completely right up my alley, and compliment Aryn's voice perfectly. And Shawn's drums both lead us and carry us along on each and every song. Scorpion Child has a sound that rock needs, and I hope these guys continue to wow us through the years. Like I said...I'm hooked!
