Book Description

May 1, 2005

"The Scorpion's Tail is a novel that is simultaneously compelling, complicated and insightful. Sylvia Torti deftly unites disparate elements and voices in this tale of the Zapatista rebellion of January 1, 1994, in Chiapas, Mexico-one of the most momentous events of the beginnings of the twenty-first century. Such personages as Subcomandante Marcos appear in the book, but the real characters are the nameless rebels, villagers, visitors and soldiers whose lives collided that fateful day, impacting them forever as this rebellion reconfigured and changed the face of the post-Cold War world."-Luis J. Rodríguez

Sylvia Torti's The Scorpion's Tail won the 2005 Miguel Mármol Prize, awarded annually by Curbstone Press for the best debut work in fiction by a Latino/a writer. This suspense-filled novel explores struggles of indigenous people in southern Mexico during the Zapatista rebellion. The Scorpion's Tail encompasses both the point of view of Amy, a young US biologist inadvertently caught up in the rebellion, and that of Chan Nah K'in, an insurgent woman guerrilla. It explores the dilemma of the Hach Winik people caught between their traditional life and the modern world, where they must take aggressive political and military action to preserve their very existence. The Scorpion's Tail is also an initiation story-Amy is plunged into the social realities of Mexico, an experience that shatters her neat, isolated world of science and changes her life forever.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Torti, a biologist, sets her debut novel right in the center of Mexico's 1994 Zapatista Rebellion, utilizing various first-person voices, including Amy, a biology professor, and Chan Nah K'in, an indigenous woman in Chiapas, where the revolution begins. For Amy, science was "her fulfillment, her religion, and research her form of prayer." Her work involves identifying and collecting insect and butterfly specimens, and when she joins a research team traveling to Mexico, she is unaware of the revolution brewing there. In direct contrast is Chan Nah K'in, who tells of the growing women's movement among the rebels, and her direct involvement with the takeover of government buildings in the same village where Amy and her research companions are housed. Other voices include members of the Mexican military preparing to take on the "indios," while knowing nothing of the poverty and unjust treatment leading to their insurrection. Torti has written a compelling story of this sometimes-overlooked period in Mexico's history--a story enriched by its honest and disparate points of view. Deborah Donovan

5.0 out of 5 stars Rebellion in Chiapas, October 24, 2006
By
This review is from: The Scorpions Tail (Paperback)

An excellent introduction to Mexican politics and the reasons behind the 1994 Zapatista uprising. Torti's story skillfully examines the economic and racial oppression of Mexico's indigenous populations and exposes to the reader an ugly side of Mexico known only to few Americans.

-Should be required reading for anyone unclear as to why thousands risk their lives each year trying to cross U.S. borders.
