First off, I've only been using this keyboard for a few hours, so I don't yet feel qualified to rank it high or low at this point. My only intent is to offer some data points that may help others decide which wireless keyboard to buy. I was specifically trying to avoid IR units due to their line-of-sight requirements.

I bought this keyboard to use in my den, where I have a computer attached to a flat-panel TV. My chair is 14 feet away from the *rear* of the computer (where the receiver dongle attaches to the USB port). I turn the computer off when it isn't in use, and I don't intend to use any of the keyboard's multi-media keys. (All I want is WEB access and email).

Note that his keyboard is smaller than the keyboard on a lap-top. (I was merely surprised and wouldn't have ordered it if I had realized).

It runs off of two AA batteries, (compartment on the bottom) and it comes with both rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries. (As the instructions warn: Don't ever try to recharge no-rechargeable batteries, it could result in "EXPLOSURE"). The cable needed to recharge the keyboard attaches to the USB dongle and to the rear of the keyboard. It is 3 1/2 feet long. I had trouble getting the cable to plug into the dongle; a manufacturing quality control issue. I succeeded, but I don't intend to use the rechargeable batteries/cable. (Do the USB ports even have power when the computer is powered off?) I cannot comment on battery life.

It claims to have a range of up to 10 meters. (1 meter is 3.2 feet). At 14 feet, transmission is unreliable and it looses key-strokes and mouse (trackball) events. It does better at 12 feet; still not satisfactory for a touch typist. At 8 feet, I'm very happy with transmission reliability! (An extension cable for the dongle might be useful - to bring the dongle around to the front of the computer thus closing the distance a little).

It takes a awhile to get used to using the trackball (which is smaller than a marble), but its operation is amazingly smooth (assuming you're within reliable transmission range) but feels a little light-weight.

In usage, I have to slide my hands up on the keyboard when using the mouse; right thumb on trackball, left thumb on the buttons. I move my hands back down to use the keyboard. That gets old very quickly if you're switching between text and trackball. So, I'll use it when necessary, but I recommend reviewing the key-board short-cuts for the GUI you're using. (i.e., so that you can get around without using a mouse).

Made in China, it has instructions in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.

For now, I intend to keep it and use it, but I don't think I'd actually recommend it, at least not for this particular application. To be honest, I'm not sure what I want, but I'm beginning to think it isn't track-ball based.
