Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This product gets some things right and some things very wrong. I didn't even know how to begin to rate it star-wise, so I gave it the average of the following:

***** 5 stars for the idea, which is to make an easy-on-the-environment non-electric laminator that anyone can use (even children or people living off the grid who might want to make some signs for their next big protest). If you could depend on the laminating cartridge to work flawlessly (see "2 stars" and "1 star" below), it might be a very handy thing for anyone making signs and lots of them.

**** 4 stars for the relatively small footprint and sleek look of the laminator sitting across the room on a desk. Sticks easily in a closet and doesn't tie up valuable electrical real estate. How nice not to have yet another cord to deal with!

*** 3 stars for the price, which I think is way too much for a simple positioning aid (which is really all it is) made of fairly flimsy black and metal-looking plastic bundled with a short 18-foot sample cartridge of laminating material instead of a standard 90-foot cartridge. (And how are you going to know how the real thing, which is pricey, is going to handle if you have difficulties, like I did, with the sample cartridge? Again, see "2 stars" and "1 star" below.)

Like cheap printers with toner cartridges that cost more than buying a new printer, replacement cartridges for this laminating system are where Scotch is going to make its money, and that's where the quality control is going to be most important. Buyers of the system need to feel confident that every single cartridge they buy will either work properly or be replaced at no charge.

I have been mostly pleased with this laminator. It's good quality, and laminates things well.

Pros:

Heat free - no worries about burns or waiting for it to heat up
Portable - you can move this around and not have to mess with cords
Ease of use - Adjust page size, set item to be laminated and crank

Cons:

Iffy quality at times - I found if you turn the crank to fast you run the risk of creases or folds. Take your time and it usually goes smoothly
Laminate thickness - the laminate is really thin and I am not sure how much wear and tear it can stand up to

Overall, for what I needed a laminater to be this one fits perfectly and suits my need. For a small business/home type set up this may do the trick. However, if you need more durability or speed you may want to look at a different one.

The 3M LS960 is a safe and electricity-free way to preserve important documents for posterity. The device is very easy to use - simply insert the document and turn the crank. The output quality is good, although I was hoping for something a little thicker on the output. There are additional cartridges available that should provide less flimsy results but I did not have those available for testing.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I actually happen to have a regular "hot" aka thermal laminator at home, so I was able to do a side by side comparison. My thermal laminator uses pouches up to legal size, which might limit its use as compared to a roll lamintor, but it's never been an issue for me.

Anyway...
The cost of purchasing a small to medium use thermal pouch laminator versus this heat free system is nearly the same. No substantial cost difference there. However, the cost of the laminate material they use is radically different. You could buy Three Hundred 9" x 11.5" pouches and One Hundred index card pouches, both in 5 mil (the thick laminate material) for the cost of One 90-foot roll of 5 mil laminate material for this heat-free system. (A difference of about 200 feet of material.)

So, for cost effectiveness, this Scotch Heat-Free system isn't the way to go.

Since you could potentially laminate something that was 17 feet long, this heat-free system does have a leg-up there.

BUT, as nearly every other reviewer has noted, once you get a wrinkle in this heat-free system, it's there for the rest of the roll. With pouches, if you get a wrinkle or an air bubble, run it again with a new pouch.

And thermal systems have motors to pull the material through. With this system, you have to crank it. So unless you need to laminate things during a power outage, the convenience factor goes to thermal systems.

I found this thing rather unfriendly to deal with. There are too many thing that you need to worry about: lining up the paper perfectly, watching for wrinkles, the laminate material sticking to the machine...

My personal experience with both systems makes a traditional hot laminator the clear winner.

Basically this is akin to placing two large sheets of packing tape over your paper. Pretty much what you'd expect from a heat-free laminator. It has a few problems though, and they can cause the job to look terrible and leave parts uncovered. While it doesn't always do this, you should make sure whatever you are laminating is either not important or has a back up copy. My problem is that sort of defeats the purpose.

So to expand on why I gave it this rating:

What's good...
- Cheaper than a real laminator
- When it works, it will do a decent job at protecting papers.
- Cheaper to maintain than a real laminator.
- Portable: light and cordless.

What's bad..
- The laminating sheets are designed for standard sized paper only. If something is smaller you'll have to cut it out, which wastes the material and is a bit of a pain.
- Frequently jams
- The sheets crinkle, possibly damaging your paper
- The sheets often do not line up, which leaves the edges exposed and sticky (since the bottoms of the sheets are sticky, when they overlap the edges are sticky).
*As a note it was on a perfectly flat surface and not moved around, so these issues were not a result of something I was doing*

Since it's for for just over $50 now, it's not a bad buy. I have used it successfully for a few things and they look fine (which is why I still give it 3 stars) but it did ruin a few papers. Like I said, just avoid using it for something that cannot be replaced.
