The Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter does well what it claims to do. It offers a safe tool--safe because the blade is not exposed--for making straight cuts in wrapping paper. Great idea, but not really very practical. It cuts great after you get it lined up perfectly, but if you don't, it just snags the paper. It takes more time to get it into a position that will make it cut smoothly than it does to get up and find a pair of scissors. 5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says! A decent tool for cutting out articles, etc., December 29, 2009

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter does well what it claims to do. It offers a safe tool--safe because the blade is not exposed--for making straight cuts in wrapping paper. It's more convenient to use for that purpose than scissors and is probably safer as well. When I'm cutting wrapping paper with scissors I inevitably end up with jagged cuts. If you're using this for wrapping presents, though, it's possible that you'll still want to have scissors nearby in case you have to make cuts when you're working on the ends of a package: cutting off extra bulk to make square corners might be more easily achieved with scissors.

The Scotch Cutter works well with thin paper, but a bit better with the thicker, higher quality gift wrap. If the paper is very thin you have to take a bit more care in holding the paper firmly at the edge when you're beginning your cut. The curling ribbon feature is just a bit of plastic on the back of the device against which you can run ribbon to curl it. This works fine, but there's no magic involved in the process.

I've tried the Cutter also on newspapers and magazines. In both cases it works well for cutting out articles. It certainly excels at straight cuts. It can also make curved cuts to a limited degree, but for cutting out images or anything but the most basic curves you'll want to use scissors or an X-Acto knife.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy Tool for Gift Givers and Crafters, January 5, 2010
This review is from: Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter, Assorted Colors (14-RC) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Length:: 3:09 Mins

After playing with this tool for a couple of weeks, I'm pleasantly surprised. While it can be looked upon as nothing more than a glorified knife, it does come in handy. The plastic covering helps protect from the occasional nick and from scarring your cutting surface. It's worked near flawlessly on almost all of the paper I've tried it on: wrapping paper, tissue paper, magazines, printer paper, even card stock (though they advise you not to). For me, it does cut more quickly than a pair of scissors and requires less effort (i.e. no opening/closing motion).

Overall this is a great product, especially if you do quite a bit of clipping--whether coupons or arts/crafts--but I am concerned about the blade's lifespan. While I don't expect it to last a decade, it seems to me that with continued use, the blade will be worn out in a few months' time.

There is one other caveat; while it's relatively simple to use, it doesn't come with crystal clear instructions. For instance, the demonstration image on the back of the product showed the tool being held a specific way--unfortunately, that wouldn't work for me and I had to adjust accordingly. Basically, you might need to play around a little bit until you find your comfort angle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Better Than Scissors, December 23, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter, Assorted Colors (14-RC) (Office Product)
1) I hate gift wrapping, and 2) I really stink at it. My ends are always jagged, and the packages look like Edward Scissorhands wrapped them.

In an effort to cut down on the small fortune I would normally spend on gift bags, I decided to try this handy little tool to see if it could somehow improve the quality of my gift wrapping (if you can even call it that). I am so glad to say that it did! They are still in no shape to be included in the Martha Stewart Hall of Fame, but at least I don't have to use a dozen bows to hide my boo-boos.

It does take a little getting used to... so I would definitely recommend giving it a couple of test runs before you give it a go on the actual presents (especially if your wrapping paper supply is meager). The instructions that are included are VERY limited. They're enough to understand the basic idea, but your first few runs will likely be trial and error.

You will have to line the blade up with the paper PERFECTLY in order to get a straight cut. If it's not lined up just right, the paper will snag and tear. Also, don't stop cutting in the middle of the paper -- you will probably find a jagged edge at the spot where you resume (much like you see when you cut with scissors). I'd also recommend using it on a hard, flat surface because it will be easier to cut and easier to make sure that you're actually cutting in a straight line.

I love the design of it! The safety cover completely protects your fingers from the blade. In fact, you would have to try pretty hard to cut yourself with this. Think of an X-Acto Knife with a cover. Check the size of your kiddo's fingers before letting them use it, though. If they can fit into that little crevice, nasty cuts will ensue, given the nature of the blade.

A good purchase and worth the money!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good at first, blade quickly dulls, December 5, 2011

This is a great little tool for cutting wrapping paper--at first. The blade soon dulls and it is almost impossible to cut paper without tearing it. As others have said, you still have to keep a pair of scissors on hand to trim up the ends. I've tossed it in the trash and gone back to using just scissors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and easy, June 13, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
We've been using this product for awhile now, started using it around Christmas and have had it through more than a few birthdays and it's been a real time/stress saver. Normally if you try to be quick with scissors you get ripped, torn, or uneven edges but with this little gadget it's a snap. What I like the most is you can use it on a table and not have to worry about dinging or scratching the surface.

We'll continue to use this for our holiday and birthday needs and if ever it breaks or wears we'll definitely be buying another.

Eliminate jagged or crooked edges when cutting gift wrapping paper. This cutter comes extremely sharp, and it works just like it is stated. This is great to have during the Christmas season or for any other gift you need to wrap. The ergonomics are excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little tool - how did I do without this?, March 24, 2010
By
This review is from: Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter, Assorted Colors (14-RC) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Scotch gift wrap cutter is very good at two tasks. The first is cutting wrapping paper. In my tests it proved easier to use than my legacy methods of really sharp scissors and the two step method of making a fold at the cut point and then using a carving knife to make the cut. With the GWC, all you have to do is find the spot you want to cut the paper from the roll, slip the bottom lip of the cutter underneath the paper and then push it straight across the roll. I found that I could cut a reasonably straight line by just using the roll as a guide. It was fast and easy.

The next task was to cut and curl ribbon. I used both a PVC sparkly plastic ribbon and standard curling ribbon while wrapping two packages. The cutter can also cut ribbon to length, and it worked fine for this. Then, I tied some extra strands of ribbon to the top of each of the two test packages as a bow and curled the ends. The ribbon curling feature worked just fine, although I felt that it took a couple tries to get my technique down to the point that the curls were as tight as those using scissors.

Overall, no complaints. This is the "go to" tool for package wrapping.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Safe Design, March 22, 2010
This review is from: Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter, Assorted Colors (14-RC) (Office Product)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
If you want a cutter that is quite safe this one fits the bill. The blade is sharp and it does a nice job of cutting the paper in a straight line.

However, when you have to cut the paper at any angle or the paper is not taught, it cannot do the job.

A good pair of scissors is much more useful, so I find that this tool is rather superfluous and unnecessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars For me, it's a once-a-year-miracle!, March 15, 2010

I love Christmas. I absolutely love it! I ordinarily love wrapping gifts -- it can be fun. However, when even the happiest of circumstances require that I wrap dozens upon dozens upon dozens of gifts, I am grateful for anything to make the job easier.

The Scotch Gift Wrap Cutter does just what it is supposed to do, and is fabulously more convenient than using scissors. When I have that many packages to wrap, this little but amazingly useful tool is absolutely miraculous!
