A Spirited Hard-Bop Session, April 29, 2008
This review is from: Scotch and Milk (Audio CD)
It seems like everyone in this group enjoys themselves in this session of seven originals and one standard. I had never owned anything by Cecil Payne and since he was 73 when this was recorded, I think it's safe to say he was in prime form for this one. Besides Cecil, the group is rounded out by two tenor saxes, Eric Alexander and Lin Halliday, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, pianist Harold Mabern, bassist John Ore and Joe Farnsworth on the drums. The group's sound in some cases is not dissimilar to Art Blakey. The more interesting contrasts in this set is a calypso beat on "Wilhelmena" and "I'm Goin' In" and "Cit Sac" where Payne switches to flute.
It's a very good energetic hard-bop set enjoyable to those who favor baritone sax, good hard-bop sounds, small group jazz, or followers of any of these musicians.

A solid outing from an underappreciated baritone legend, Cecil Payne. This septuagenarian still sports the fire of his bebop roots.
