4.0 out of 5 stars Nice CD cases if Amazon restocks them, August 31, 2006
This review is from: Scotch Slim CD Shades for CDs or DVDs, Assorted Colors, 25-Count Packages (Pack of 4) (Health and Beauty)
These are nice cases....great for mailing, they close better than some of their competitors.

The design of the case allows weight to be distributed along a the outer surface. IE its fairly well designed to be crush proof for the contents.

I've compare these to Discsaver brand....and while the design is different and its possible the Discsaver brand is tougher, but if I looks again I think these are a bit harder, and will likely deflect a puncture from mailing a bit better. More importantly I have had a major problems with Disksavers with the middle core getting worn or damaged. IE the Disksaver often fail to snap shut tighly as they are designed.

This is a design weakness and once the design fails you can not tighten up the case....so the clamshell on the Discsaver can just flop open.

These Scotch brand ones don't have any wear issues. The lack of defects and near close shock proof make me want to buy these, again.

Now if Amazon will only restock them.

I use these by the hundreds and these are good.

Update. I have found that Scotch has done a minor redesign of these. The original clasp was tad bit better. I have found if they don't close tightly I can put a small flat screwdriver put it where it clasps....give a quick twist...it will tweak the plastic and make it a very good close. I am somewhat a perfectionist on a tight close...because I use them in mailing....and I am just fine that I can tweak them to make the marginals into a tight close. Something I have attempted many times with discsaver brand but can not do.

The only other downside is one of the colors is hot pink....which when I mail them I always hope the guy has girl to hand it off to.

And if you read all the way down here....if Amazon restocks these at the 100 for 18 dollars price again...they are as good as it gets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wolff is right but the DiscSavers are nice too and there are other options., November 21, 2007

My first choice for archiving discs is Case Logic binder storage. Takes way less space than boxes. I would not trust most sleeves for long term storage, but the Case Logic sleeves seem well designed, holding the plastic away from the disc with a textured lining.

Case Logic binders come with 1 disc/page, 2/page and 4/page, either non-removable or the removable 'Prosleeves'. The 4/page size enables fast searching of large collections, and there seems not much point for such large pages to be 'removable'. I use this for HBO movies etc. The 1/page and 2/page is where 'removables' make sense. This fits into a file cabinet, yet enables holding large collections, and also allows the occasional removal of just those sleeves that you need. I use this for computer program archiving.

For times when you need individual cases, then these Scotch Shades have these benefits:

--Thin as the thinnest and stronger than the strongest. They and the DiscSavers are both 'rubbery' so they don't tend to shatter the first time you drop them, nor the hundredth time.
--Allows for paper document inserts, unlike DiscSavers.
--According to Wolff the Scotch Shades clasps last better. (However in my experience the DiscSaver lasts well enough.)

The Discsavers are just as thin, just as strong, and have the following advantages.

--Clear plastic cases are better looking and easier to read the label through.
--Nifty center button to pop the case open. Definitely pleasant for discs that you handle frequently.
--Scotch Slimshade colors are ugly and annoying.

Current Amazon listings:
DiscSavers, Clear - 50 Count
DiscSavers, Clear - 200 Count

Avoid semi-rigid plastic sleeves. Everything in that category seems to have problems. One such plastic envelope is by a major manufacturer but if you read the reviews, can leave a film that destroys the disc.

Avoid those 'clamshell' shaped cases. Very similar in materials to DiscSavers, but the round shape is not practical for stacking or standing on a shelf.

P.S. NOVEMBER 2010. I still like DiscSavers but after shipping they are not cheap. So for single discs, I just use Caselogic PSR-100 Double Sided ProSleeve II Pages. Each sleeve can hold 1 or 2 discs, is very space efficient, and by itself gives adequate short term protection. For long term protection, just place any number of sleeves in a single envelope, drawer, box or binder.
