I'm here to say that duct tape isn't just for ducts anymore. I could not survive without it. I can't say enough about duct tape. One of the earliest versions was developed in 1942 by the good people at Revolite (according to Wikipedia, so who freakin' knows?), and later used extensively by the military and NASA. It even helped save the Apollo 13 crew (wow!) I like duct tape for its sound-proofing qualities when concentration and stealth are a priority. But don't go cheap as the shoddier brands can easily be loosened with the tongue. In the home improvement universe, duct tape is Sgt Pepper's, Citizen Kane and The Great Gatsby all wrapped into one. If I could, I'd give this review a hundred stars, but The Man has boxed me in at five. So in conclusion, even if you don't need duct tape, buy a roll today, "invite" some people over to your motel room, let your imagination run amok and surprise yourself!

3M calls this product "Pro Strength", but a closer look reveals that it is not close to their top-of-the-line model.

It is not very thick and is very difficult to tear cleanly, without runs down the roll.

This product is similar to the 'off-brand' versions but costs more.

If you're looking for high quality duct tape, keep shopping.

This is very poor quality, certainly not professional strength. It is very thin, tends to splinter when tearing it and has a very toxic smell.

Probably the best duct tape on the market. I use duct tape around the farm and home on a regular basis. The product is a little price'y but well worth the money if you expect it to work.

The first thing I noticed upon opening the duct tape was a strong, burnt smell. My friend described it as a burnt PVC smell, which makes sense if the tape was heat-cut and rapidly sealed in plastic. The roll of tape is really what smells; when using smaller pieces of tape the smell is barely noticeable, if that.

So smell aside, the tape works as advertised. I've owned this tape for about a week now, and have applied it to a painted wood window frame, and painted cinder block walls. After the tape has been applied and has sat for about 24 hours, if it is removed it leaves a sticky yellow residue. I have applied two other brands of duct tape to the same surfaces and removed them without any residue left behind.

I'm not sure if I received a bad roll, or what the case is, but this tape is going to leave me with a sticky mess to clean up once I remove it.

I figure the tape was a reasonably good value and it does stick to things. I deducted a star for the smell, and another for the sticky residue the tape leaves behind leaving me at a 3-star review. If you decide to buy this tape, I hope you have better luck than I did.

I don;t know what happened with that roll but the sections on both sides are completely covered in glue so it sticks to everything you lay it flat on. In addition it is really hard to pull from the roll. Maybe something went wrong with their glue? Anyway I got another one (store bought) and am not using this one... First time it ever happened to me on a brand name; you would expect that from a cheap imitation...

I used to be a ln air duct cleaner and for years I wished duct tape would come out with something equal to or better than aluminium tape. Now they've done it. This stuff adheres to everything and it stays no matter how cold or hot the duct work can become. It has the tensile strength of regular duct tape and can still be used to heal cuts. It does all of the things that the mythbusters on the Discovery channel says regular duct tape does, only better. Great product.

There is a difference between the many brands/types of duct tape. This one is an exceptionally strong and tear resistant version. I use this tape to seal boxes of heavier objects that I mail to persons through the APO system which tends to be stressful on such packages to say the least. I have never had one of these seams that I taped down with this duct tape come open. There have been a couple of instances where the box burst but not the tape, be warned this is more adhesive than most and come off the roll with a bit more effort than the cheaper brands/types and you need scissors to cut it, it is good strong stuff and I can't recommend it highly enough for those jobs where you want this kind of bonding and strength.
