Book Description

June 1, 2000
This is a fascinating book about Scotland drawn from hundreds if not thousands of years of storytelling. From the oral tradition of Scots, Gaelic, and Norse speakers of the past, it presents a new picture of who the Scottish are and where they come from. The stories McHardy recounts may be hilarious, tragic, heroic, frightening, or just plain bizarre, but they all provide an insight into a unique tradition of myth, legend, and folklore that has marked both the language and landscape of Scotland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have to (respectfully) disagree with first commentary, September 9, 2002

The book is not intended as a scholarly production. Rather, it presents the tales in readily accessible portions. I have had the good fortune to see Mr. McHardy singing ballads and telling some of these stories. In person, the stories were longer. Here, his purpose is to introduce readers to the lore. The first commentator, it seems, criticizes him for accomplishing what he set out to do. This is a lively, attractive, and altogether fine introduction. Highly recommended

3.0 out of 5 stars Scottish Myth, Legend & Folklore, July 27, 2001

This review is from: Scotland: Myth, Legend & Folklore (Paperback)
I bought this book expecting a scholarly presentation of Scottish lore, and was a little disappointed.

McHardy does provide some excellent tales of the supernatural, and strange but most of the book reads like a childrens book. There are several goofy illustrations that are not only visually annoying, but they do nothing to add to the book in any way and made it hard to take McHardy's life-long interest in Scotland seriously.

I had been hoping for the tales as well as a look into the origin of the tales and some of the history behind the storytelling tradions in Scotland. There is a short introduction that gives only the bare bones of the information I wanted.

The book is however well organized and has some excellent maps for reference. McHardy also provides a list of books for "further reading" that could lead the reader to some interesting sources for more tales.

This book is a good place to start for stories, but certainly isn't the best, or most informative one out there.
