3.0 out of 5 stars Good but tends to be repetitive
This is an ok romance. (The Scots emphasis in the title is neither relevant to nor a part of the story.) My criticism of this book is the page after page of repetitive mental musings: Gregor repeating to himself, essentially, "oh look she's a desireable woman how did I miss that she has grown up?" - once was enough to make the point - and Venetia "oh no I don't want...

Gregor MacLean and Venetia Oglivie have been best friends since they

search for her. Unfortunately Gregors' temper has the ability to
create storms and when he does find her they, along with the other

becomes safe to travel again.

As the days go by Gregor and Venetia begin to see each other as more
than friends and desire begins to simmer between them. Gregor does not
want a wife or believe in love but when Venetia's reputation is at
risk he may have to sacrifice his freedom for his friend and Venetia
has no intention of marrying a man who does not love her, even if it
is her handsome, beloved best friend.

To Scotland, With Love is a heartwarming and entertaining story.
Surrounded by a cast of engaging and amusing characters, Gregor and
Venetia fall in love. Their emotions are vividly expressed as their
friendship develops into something more. Venetia is endearing. She is
sweet and kind and Gregor is handsome and dashing. The way the sky
thundered when Gregor is angry is magical and powerful. To Scotland,
With Love is an enchanting love story!

My criticism of this book is the page after page of repetitive mental musings: Gregor repeating to himself, essentially, "oh look she's a desireable woman how did I miss that she has grown up?" - once was enough to make the point - and Venetia "oh no I don't want to lose his friendship and if I act on my desire he'll lose interest". Again, once was enough to make the point. It got a little annoying and the musings were just the same thing over and over - so just skip those parts when you run into them the second, third, fourth, etc. times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute humorous story, January 22, 2009
This review is from: To Scotland, With Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first Karen Hawkins book, and won't be my last. I felt that it was very funny, the banter between hero and heroine funny and realistic. The romance was steamy, the main love scene tender. Well written, in a style similar to Julia Quinn and her "Bridgertons." The friendship seemed real. I thought knowing just stating that they knew eachother well was going to be hard to "prove"-I was wrong. These two knew eachother like best friends should.
What I didn't like is that there was some things that seemed unlikely to be accurate in a historical novel. The hero and heroine were best friends for 29 years. The hero is 36, the heroine 34. Neither have married; basically London and the Ton just accept their friendship the way it is. I can't imagine that would be likely. Also, being 36 myself, there was an immaturity to their thinking that... well... kind of bugged me. All that "He's just Gregor" drove me crazy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one!, September 21, 2007
This review is from: To Scotland, With Love (Mass Market Paperback)
Karen, again has another masterpiece. I was pleased with the way the book tied into the previous one without the previous story outshinning the new book. The characters are charming and I can't wait until the next one comes out. Karen Hawkins always has a way of making all of her stories a fun read. Good going Karen.

Venetia Oglivie is always trying to help everyone and when she is tricked into leaving London with a fortune hunter Lord Gregor MacLean takes off to save her. Gregor can make it snow and since he angry regarding Venetia England has the worse snowstorm in history. While Gregor, Venetia and a cast of outlandish characters, dig out from the storm their friendship becomes so much more. I loved it this book and the series - laugh aloud moments, romance and great writing! Enjoy!

Check out the whole MacLean Curse Series How to Abduct a Highland Lord (1) To Scotland, With Love (2) , To Catch a Highlander (3) due out - Jan 22, 2008

3.0 out of 5 stars It was OK., August 31, 2007
This review is from: To Scotland, With Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This book had too much dialog with characters I didn't care about and it took way to long to get to the romance (the reason we read these books in the first place). And it's a sequel? Why?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and Exciting!, August 30, 2007

I love stories where best friends fall in love and Karen Hawkins writes a great one here.

Gregor MacLean has been friends with Venetia Oglivie since they were children. While he deplores her attempts to get involved in the lives of others, he also trusts her superior good sense and intellect. But when a fortune hunter seems to have tricked Venetia into eloping with him, Gregor does something very unusual for such a cool and controlled man -- he flies to the rescue!

Of course, Gregor isn't your normal hero! He's a MacLean and has been cursed, so when he looses his temper, the weather breaks loose with him. Since he's worried about Venetia, and angry with the rake who absconded with her, soon it's snowing like crazy -- in April!

Venetia and Gregor are wonderful characters. I could see their slow awakening to the fact that they weren't just friends, but were also in love. The entire book was delightful and fun and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I also liked that there were a lot of other characters at the inn, some of them very amusing, too.

Better yet, the next book is about Dougal, and I think he's going to be the best one of all. An excellent continuation of the MacLean Curse Series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh My Books! Review, August 26, 2011
This review is from: To Scotland, With Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I read the first book of this series, How To Abduct a Highland Lord, and liked it. But I loved To Scotland, With Love!

When Gregor MacLean finds out his childhood friend Venetia has been "abducted" by a man, he rides to save her before it's to late.

I always like stories where the characters are childhood friends and turn into lovers. There is so much confusion between their feelings! Gregor and Venetia feel comfortable with each other, had secret jokes and understood each other better than anyone. But when they start to have other feelings, and share some kisses, everything turns into a chaos.

They were so much fun, I was laughing most of the time I read this book. Gregor is very hot tempered, and thanks to his curse, most of the time was snowing, trapping them to the Inn. Venetia is spirited isn't afraid to express her opinion, specially to Gregor, but also don't know when to stop helping everyone with their problems.

Gregor and Venetia are caught in the secondary characters issues while they try to understand their feelings and save Venetia's honor. Add to that mix Venetia's desperate mother and bad tempered grandmother, who is one of my favorite characters!

I don't want to say more about this story, but I really enjoyed it. It was a fun book, and I can't wait to read the next one of the series, To Catch a Highlander.
