4.0 out of 5 stars The Winding Road to National Identity

The author does an excellent job of presenting the key stages of Scottish history to permit the reader insight into the complexities in the emergence of the Scottish nation and...

The book is in terrible shape -- but was listed as like new -- the cover is wrinkled, the binding was poorly glued back together. However, the book is very interesting and well worth the read -- so interesting and helpful I ordered one for myself after borrowing a copy from a friend. The book is in terrible shape -- but was listed as like new -- the cover is wrinkled, the binding was poorly glued back together. However, the book is very interesting and well worth the read -- so interesting and helpful I ordered one for myself after borrowing a copy from a friend. Now I have to try to find a copy of the book that is in good shape and worth keeping on my bookshelf -- the copy I received is just a waste of money and not worth keeping.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Winding Road to National Identity, June 16, 2007
This review is from: Scotland: From Prehistory to the Present (Paperback)
This book is excellent in its rational perspective. The path of a Scottish National Identity through history is laid bare with the myths and heroics set apart from the objective sequence of events. The author does an excellent job of presenting the key stages of Scottish history to permit the reader insight into the complexities in the emergence of the Scottish nation and its later incorporation into the British Empire.

While the perspective provides historic insight, the reader should be aware that prior reading in Scottish and Brittish history is necessary. Given the book's concise style and the breadth of the period covered (8000 BCE to the present) Ms Watson assumes some basic knowledge of the subject.
