5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Guide for Golfer's Looking for "Unusual Information" on Scottish Golf Courses, December 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I would agree with the other reviewer of this book. However, I believe that review is based on an ill-purchased book and not what this book is sharing with the reader.

If you are looking for a general guide book to golfing in Scotland and need quick comments and contact info THIS IS NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU....

If you are looking for some historical and analytical information about golf courses in Scotland this is a very interesting and quick read. It's written by a professor (Geology I think) and reads more like a college text book. Very indepth look at the different types of courses and how they came to be developed - from an environmental standpoint. The author is not trying to tell you about great courses to go play, but rather about the underlying rock and soil conditions; dune creations; affects of the receding glaciers, etc....

I've read through many (40+) books about golf in Scotland and the history of the people, courses and equipment. Many of the history books are repetitive - interesting, but repetitive. I came across this book and bought it just to see what it was about and was surprised to find information on topics not covered in anything else.

If you are interested in learning why links land is links land or what created the undulating land forms for the inland courses or what's the affect of the weather on the courses - this is an interesting book.

2.0 out of 5 stars More academic rather than travel based, July 31, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Scotland's Golf Courses (Paperback)
This book is an academic treatise on the topography, climate and socioeconomics regarding Scotlands golf courses. It is not a comprehensive review of Scotlands golf courses for the golfing tourist. If you are planning a golf trip to Scotland is has marginal significance at best.
